Chi Square Questions Fall, 2013BIO303 Lab II1. In corn, colored aleurone is due to the dominant allele R. When homozygous, the recessive allele, r, produces colorless aleurone. The plant color is controlled by another gene with 2 alleles, Y and y. The dominant Y produces green plants and the recessive y produces yellow plants. A dihybrid plant was generated by mating a green plant with colored aleurone with a yellow plant with colorless aleurone. The dihybrid plant was testcrossed. The following progeny were generated:Green colored 88Yellow colored 12Green colorless 8Yellow colorless 92a. Use a Chi Square to test whether the plant color gene obeys Mendel’s Law of Random Segregation.b. Use a Chi Square to test whether the aleurone color gene obeys Mendel’s Law of RandomSegregation.c. Use a Chi Square to test whether the plant color gene and the aleurone color gene obey Mendel’s Law of Independent Assortment.2. (Question 22 in book) The following are F2 results of two of Mendel’s monohybrid crosses.a. Full pods 882Constricted pods 299b. Violet flowers 705White flowers 224For each cross, state the null hypothesis to be tested using χ2 analysis. Calculate the χ2 value and determine the p value. Interpret the p values. Can the deviation in each case be attributed to chance or not? Which of the two crosses shows a greater amount of deviation?3. (Question 24 in book) In assessing data that fell into two phenotypic classes, a geneticist observed values of 250:150. She decided to perform a χ2 analysis by using the following two different null hypotheses: (a) the data fit a 3:1 ratio, and (b) the data fit a 1:1 ratio. Calculate the χ2 values for each hypothesis. What can be concluded about each hypothesis?4. Among dogs, short hair is dominant to long hair and dark coat color is dominant to white (albino) coat color. Given the cross below, write the most probable genotype for the parents. Given these genotypes, conduct a χ2 analysis to determine if this data fits your predicted genotype probabilities. Parent phenotypes Offspring phenotypes short/dark long/dark short/albino long/albinodark, short x dark, short 175 67 61 215. In corn, purple kernels are dominant over yellow kernels and full kernels are dominant over shrunken kernels. A dihybrid plant was test crossed and the following progeny were obtained.Purple, Full 130Purple, Shrunken 122Yellow, Full 111Yellow, Shrunken 109a. Use Chi Square to test whether the alleles of the Purple gene obey Mendel’s Law of Random Segregation.b. Use Chi Square to test whether the color and kernel shape genes assort independently. Explain what these results suggest about the location of these genes. 6. In many plants flower color is controlled by a single gene while in other plants it is controlled by the interaction of several genes. To determine how flower color in four o’clock flowers is controlled, a red flowered strain was bred with a white flowered strain. All of the F1 plants had pink flowers. In the F2 generation 169 plants had pink flowers, 86 had red flowers, and 75 had white flowers. Use chi-square to test the hypothesis that in four o’clocks the flower color trait is controlled by a single gene with two alleles that obey Mendel’s Law of
