expected to attend every lecture and 10 of your final grade will be based on your attendance and participation at my discretion Missing lectures is detrimental to your performance as important and often complex topics are covered Simply photocopying your friends lecture notes is likely to result in a lack of understanding of the lecture material Office hours are not designed to be a substitute for lectures but rather for answering specific questions for the purpose of clarification You are expected to notify me about missing my lectures by phone or email in advance Absences with legitimate excuses such as illness with a written note from a health professional or a documented death in the family will not be held against you Following a legitimate absence you are urged to consult with your fellow students to borrow notes read the material and find out about other pertinent information that was passed on to your colleagues Here is Kean University s most recent Student Attendance Policy NEW STUDENT ATTENDANCE POLICY EFFECTIVE FALL 2007 FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PROVOST The following attendance policy has been approved by the Faculty Senate and the administration and replaces the attendance policy which appears in the current catalogs Attendance is expected in all courses Attendance will be a component of the grade of any course if so stated in the syllabus Students are responsible for informing the instructor in advance or in a timely manner of the reasons for their absence Instructors in consultation with their department chairs are expected to respect university practices and policies regarding what counts as an excused absence Typically excused absences include illness bereavement or religious observances Serious tardiness may be dealt with at the discretion of the instructor B Class Etiquette Generally my lectures end with a question period during which time you will have ample opportunity to ask questions However I encourage you to ask questions during my lectures as well If you have a question or comment and you wish to share it while I am lecturing quietly raise your hand and wait until called upon Turn off your cell phones pagers and other potentially noise making gadgets Do not talk to your classmates even if the topic pertains to the lecture as this is disturbing behavior to me and more importantly to your classmates I cannot stress how important it is to avoid conversations Generally any disturbing behavior will result in my asking you to leave the classroom You are expected to arrive to all lectures on time and leave only after I finish answering the last question Do not be late and do not leave early Should you need to go to the restroom do so very quietly and do not ask for permission or disturb my lecture or your classmates C Academic Integrity Do not cheat off of others and do not let anyone cheat off of your work either Both the contributor and recipient of the help will be penalized You might get a zero on the test you might fail the course or you may get expelled Is the extra two points on that question assuming your friend has it right worth it I expect you to adhere to Kean University s Academic Integrity Policy especially with respect to cheating and plagiarism It can be found at http www kean edu forms AcademicIntegrity pdf II EXAMS AND GRADING The grading for this course is divided into different categories Here is the breakdown Component Exam I Exam II Exam III Exam IV Lecture attendance Lab completion lab report s and exam of final grade 15 15 20 20 10 20 A Lecture Component There will be three exams Each exam will constitute 15 20 of your final grade The test material is not cumulative but as with any other course knowledge of all the information covered in all the lectures is necessary to do well Do not miss the exams as I do not offer make up exams Only legitimate excuses such as documented illness or documented death in the family are acceptable Other excuses are to be considered as legitimate only at my discretion Grading for students missing an exam with legitimate excuses will be decided on an individual basis but will likely constitute a cumulative exam at the end of the semester Failing to write an exam without a legitimate excuse will result in a grade of 0 zero for your mark and automatically drops your final grade by 15 20 No exceptions will be made The use of electronic equipment is strictly prohibited You can bring a non scientific calculator for the relatively simple calculations that need to be performed in some sections of this course Some of you may not even need a calculator for the simple algebraic operations that are required in the tests Suspicious looking calculators will be taken away immediately B Lab Component The labs account for 20 of your final grade Other information on individual labs as well as the details about each lab will be provided later You will need to purchase a lab manual and a slide coverslip kit form Kean University s bookstore Please do this before the start of the first lab C Tentative Lecture Schedule The following information is provided as a guide only
