Camino Oral: Fonética, fonología y práctica de los sonidos del español. McGrawHill, 2000. (includes CDs)V. CATALOG DESCRIPTIONSPAN 4456. Advanced Grammar and Linguistics. 3-0-3. Prerequisite: SPAN 3302 or SPAN 3303. Advanced study of grammar from a linguistic perspective. Provides an overview of phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax. Exposes students to dialectical variations of the Spanish-speaking world. Stresses development of oral proficiency. Course taught in Spanish. VI. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Every KSU student is responsible for upholding the provisions of the Student Code of Conduct, as published in the Undergraduate of Graduate Catalogs. Section II of the Student Code of Conduct addresses the University's policy on academic honesty, including provisions regarding plagiarism and cheating, unauthorized access to University materials, misrepresentation/falsification of University records or academic work, malicious removal, retention, or destruction of library materials, malicious/intentional misuse of computer facilities and/or services, and misuse of student identification cards. Incidents of alleged academic misconduct will be handled through the established procedures of the University Judiciary Program, which includes either an "informal" resolution by a faculty member, resulting in a grade adjustment, or a formal hearing procedure, which may subject a student to the Code of Conduct's minimum one semester suspension requirement. DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR: The University has a stringent policy and procedure for dealing with behavior which disrupts the learning environment. Consistent with the belief that disruptive behavior can interrupt the learning of others, behavior which fits the UniversityÕs definition of disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. HUMAN DIGNITY: The University has formulated a policy on human rights which is intended to provide a learning environment which recognized individual worth. The activities of this class will be conducted in both the spirit and the letter of that policy. SPAN 4456 syllabus (p.1)DISABILITY POLICY: Kennesaw State University provides program accessibility and reasonable accommodations for persons identified as disabled under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 or the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. A number of services are available to help disabled students with their academic work. In order to make arrangements, students must visit the Office of Disabled Student Support Services (770/423-6443) and arrange an individual assistance plan. In some cases, certification of disability is required. VII. COURSE GOALS & OBJECTIVES: Content objectives. The student will be able to:1. Grammara) demonstrate an understanding of the grammar covered in the course. b) discuss & explain grammar in the target language using correct technical terms.c) identify the major differences between English and Spanish grammar relevant for learnersof Spanish as a second/foreign language. To achieve these objectives, the student will review advanced grammatical structures and practice integrating them into appropriate oral and written exercises. 2. Linguisticsa) demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts in phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax.b) acquire the basic terminology related to the above areas c) have an increased awareness of the variety and complexity of the Spanish language d) identify some linguistic attitudes and stereotypes associated with different dialects To achieve these objectives, the student will analyze and discuss various spoken and written textsthat reflect specific characteristics of the Spanish language. Language Proficiency Objectives. The student will be able to: 1. Reading:a) understand main ideas and most supporting details of written discourse in areas appropriate to the course content.b) demonstrate an emerging ability to understand written discourse beyond the literal meaning of the text. To achieve these objectives, the student will work in and out of class with a variety of texts related to pedagogical grammar and applied linguistics. 2. Listening:SPAN 4456 syllabus (p.2)a) understand main ideas and most detail of speech on a variety of topics appropriate to the course content.b) demonstrate an awareness of major social, linguistic and cultural issues that go beyond theliteral meaning of the “spoken" text.c) identify a variety of dialectical speech variations To achieve these objectives, the student will engage in various listening activities based on pedagogical as well as authentic audiovisual material designed for a variety of audiences: grammar explanations, class discussions, presentations by classmates, TV commercials and news, recordings provided by the textbook publisher, soap operas, etc. 3. Writing:a) meet writing needs appropriate to the course content.b) demonstrate an emerging ability to write about abstract topics and defend a point of view.c) produce writing samples comprehensible to native speakers unaccustomed to dealing with non-native speakers. To achieve this objective, the student will produce writing samples for tasks at the advanced proficiency level. 4. Speaking:a) show an emerging ability to participate in discussions on abstract topics appropriate to the course content.b) produce speech comprehensible to native speakers unaccustomed to dealing with non-native speaker.c) use advanced grammatical structures when speaking Spanish. To achieve these objectives, the student will participate in class discussions, explain grammar, practice oral summaries, give short talks, present oral arguments, and perform a variety of other advanced communicative tasks. 5. Culture:a) understand the multiplicity of Hispanic cultures as manifested through language variation.b) understand the main cultural issues presented in a variety of written and audiovisual materials.c) demonstrate an understanding of cultural patterns of interaction.d) use culturally appropriate
