Fall 2007 Math 312 Concepts of Real Analysis Section 01 M W F 01 25PM 02 15PM 106 Osmond Instructor Dr Aissa WADE Office 317 McAllister Building Phone 865 7311 Email wade math psu edu Office Hours Mondays and Wednesdays 4 00 5 00pm Course Description This course is an introduction to rigorous analytic proofs involving properties of real numbers continuity differentiation integration and infinite sequences and series Prerequisite Math 141 Textbook Introduction to Analysis by Arthur Mattuck Prentice Hall 1999 Topics We will cover Chapters 1 17 and part of Chapter 22 Calculators Calculators are not allowed on the exams and quizzes Homework Homework will be assigned every week No late homework will be accepted All answers must be justified by rigorous arguments No credit will be given for poorly presented work You are encouraged to work with other students on homework assignments but must write up solutions individually and list on your paper students with whom you worked Examinations There will be one midterm and a comprehensive final exam The dates and locations of the exams will be announced later in class Students who have a valid documented reason such as a class conflict or illness during both the conflict and regular examination times are permitted to schedule a makeup examination with no penalty Students who do not have a valid reason for missing the examination such as forgetting the date time or room of an examination can schedule a makeup but 30 percent will be deducted from their score their highest possible score will be 70 percent The final exam period will begin on Monday December 17 and will end on Friday December 21 Students should not make arrangements to leave University Park before Saturday December 22 2007 No early exams 1 Grading Policy Grades will be assigned on the basis of 350 points distributed as follows 150 points for homework and quizzes 100 points for midterm examination 100 points for final examination Course Webpage A webpage for the class will be maintained at www math psu edu wade math312 FA07 html Academic Integrity All Penn State policies regarding academic Integrity apply to this course Academic integrity is the pursuit of scholarly activity in an open honest and responsible manner Academic integrity is a basic guiding principle for all academic activity at The Pennsylvania State University and all members of the University community are expected to act in accordance with this principle Consistent with this expectation the University s Code of Conduct states that all students should act with personal integrity respect other students dignity rights and property and help create and maintain an environment in which all can succeed through the fruits of their efforts Academic sanctions range from a warning to removal from the academic program and include deductions of points or alterations in grades Please see the Eberly College of Science Academic Integrity homepage for additional information and procedures at www science psu edu academic Integrity Policy htm 2
