Students will identify natural fibers and their properties Students will identify manmade fibers and their properties Students will compare and contrast fibers yarns and fabrics Students will compare and contrast the performance characteristics of natural and manmade fibers yarns and fabrics Students will identify the skills necessary to test textiles for their properties and performance Students will evaluate and identify properties of everyday fabrics as a consumer Assessments Lab assignment Project 2 and evaluation Lab book Project 2 and evaluation Lecture activities student and teacher evaluation Lab assignment testing lab book assignments Project 2 and project 1 Final project and lab assignments Final project and exam Course Expectations All students must complete reading assignments before class to assure intelligent participation Class discussions and student opinions are encouraged and expected Assignments and projects are to be prepared in a professional manner Lettering graphs charts and text must be done by computer and presented in a professional manner Information from all sources used must be appropriately cited Attendance is an integral part of this class and will be used in student evaluation It is important to be in class to establish connections with each other and enhance the learning environment Because lab equipment cannot be checked out or borrowed attendance at lab is required as long as any lab assignment is outstanding Assignments are due on the date assigned at the beginning of class Late assignments after class starts will receive 10 less of earned credit for each day late After 3 days no credit will be given Projects 1 Research Presentation and Bulletin Board Group Project Each of five student groups 4 6 students each will research and deliver a lecture presentation of one fiber group and create a bulletin board to display in the classroom You may use Power Point to illustrate your presentation Research the fiber group through at least 6 different sources two of which must NOT be internet references At the conclusion of the lecture presentation the group will turn in a typed abstract summary of your presentation Write a 15 question quiz to give in class Criteria for presentation 50 points History Political economic manufactured processed etc 5 Characteristics 30 Molecular composition Elasticity Tensile Strength Aesthetics Durability Comfort safety Appearance retention Care Environmental impact Cost Performance Samples 25 Stages of processing or production 15 End Uses 10 Strengths Weaknesses 5 Quiz 5 Include also in your presentation Are the fibers within the group used in combinations with other fibers To what advantages Personal experiences and anecdotes about fiber Personal opinions and biases prejudices regarding fiber Any changes of opinions or dramatic insights regarding fiber Criteria for bulletin board evaluation 25 points 5 use of entire allocated space 5 aesthetic appeal and effectiveness of message 15 use of color and professional computer lettering 5 legibility from a distance approximately 15 feet or more 10 creativity and originality ideas not previously used by commercial ads or students 30 properties and performance of fiber identified choose the properties from your summary that will enhance your bulletin board message or theme 30 uses and salability of fiber minimum of 5 uses must be identified in written report all five do not have to show on display Criteria for written abstract and references cited 25 points 5 cover page 25 mechanics spelling punctuation grammar 50 abstract history of fiber fiber properties performance use by consumer 5 uses and price information 20 references cited 2 Individual Lab Notebook Students will keep a lab notebook on lab testing and assignments done in labs Only lab information as assigned should be included 3 Partner Research With a partner of your choice choose a fabric to evaluate in lab It will be necessary to cut apart this fabric for testing purposes Possible options large towel king size pillowcase sheet item of used large or X large sized apparel where content tags are legible large over 1 yard fabric remnant Give a short 10 minute oral presentation in class Submit the results in writing including the following testing information Cover page Introduction explaining fabric choice Identification of fiber properties refer to example Finishes and design application Sketch of microscopic appearance of fiber s Flame retardant test burn test Water resistant absorption test Wrinkle crease resistant test Stain removal tests may include Ball point pen Grass Lipstick Tomato catsup Grease Your choice Conclusion and personal interpretation of results References cited and appendices as needed Extra credit options Additional points may be earned by completing either or both of the options listed Each option is worth 15 points Option 1 Written summary of 3 articles pertaining to fibers fabrics or yarns Length of 2 3 pages excluding reference and cover page Option 2 Mystery Swatches Students will identify 10 mystery fabrics by completing textile information cards and conducting tests on the fabric s yarns and fibers Mystery fabric cards sheets may be kept in the back of student lab notebooks Grading Evaluation will be based on a weighted percentage 10 Attendance
