MA 202: Presentations Elliott, Millman, Vanderpool, WatsonStudent presentations will be given (most likely) during the week of April 12 and 19 and will count as 15% of the total grade in the course. The goals of this exercise emphasize the quality of the mathematics and are based on the NCTM standards. They are- For students to began to learn to work on mathematics collaboratively in groups - For each student in MA 202 to make a quality oral presentation about some part of mathematics covered in the course- For students to begin to think about mathematics both independently and as part of a group- For students to began to learn to write about mathematics- To acquaint the students with some journals and articles in the literature which are mathematics content based- For students to present ideas with a conceptual emphasisThere will be six to eight groups formed first by volunteering and then by random choice by the instructor. Students will be given a choice of topics by the instructor. A group which would like to look at a topic which is not on the list of choices can do so but must get the approval of the instructor at least a week in advance of the presentation. The presentation of each group should be, in total, about 30 minutes long (if the group has 6 members). Each member of the group must make an oral presentation of at least five minutes regardless of the size of the group. In addition, every student must turn in a written paper about the topic of their group’s presentation at the end of the presentation. No late papers will be accepted and there are no postponements of the presentations. While the presentation will be group work and the papers can be discussed with members of your group, each person’s paper should be written by one person only and should not duplicate the work of others. Class membersare expected to attend class whether or not their group is presenting. Missing class (in full or in part) will result in a ten point reduction of your grade for the presentation assignment. The presentation: The group will decide how to structure its presentation (remembering that everyone must speak). The audience for the presentation is the members of your MA 202 class and your purpose is to explain the material in your section to your fellow students. In addition, there may be other requirements about specific presentation topics. The presentations will be evaluated for- Quality of the oral presentation as a presentation: (20 points)- Preciseness and mathematical correctness (20 points)- Applicability to the classroom- did you relate the material to what you would expect to see in K-8? (20 points) (This is not the same as presenting it to school children)- Creativity-did you bring something to the presentation other than what was in the article or book? (10 points)The paper (30 points): This material should be similar to a lesson plan. You should state your goals for the presentation emphasizing the mathematical content goals that you have, the structurethat your group has planned, and why you chose the examples or manipulatives that you did. Yes,of course, spelling and grammar count. While there is no formal length requirement, 3 pages or soshould suffice. We strongly urge you to practice the presentation as a group and coach each other on the organization of material for each individual speaker and speaking itself. Constructive criticism is quite important. You will have 30 minutes in class to start the process of constructing your presentation but will need some more time out of class. Peer Mentor Assessment Assignment: Each person will be paired up with someone from another group. Person A will be asked to review Person B’s presentation using the criteria in the second set of bullets above. Person A will then give it to the instructor after the instructor has returned Person B’s paper with a grade on it. Person A’s comments will have nothing to do with the grade that Person B gets on the assignment. Person B’s assessment will be treated (and graded) like a homework assignment.. Honesty, respect, and constructive criticism are important here.3-7-05
