Experiences in the course will include an introduction to: hands on pre-K to 12 field experiences, professional portfolio, teacher professionalism, and technology. Students will begin their professional career path plan as well as investigate opportunities in the field of teacher education. Some of the course experiences will be on-line using the computer through JetNet/Moodle. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Students Acquire from this Course (Educational Objectives) Jackson Community College Associate Degree Outcomes Addressed in this Course ADO 8 Working in Small Groups ADO 9 Personal and Ethical Responsibility Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Students Acquire from this Course (Educational Objectives) Successful students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate the effective use of the writing process through written reflections, career pathway planning and begin the development of a professional teaching portfolio. 2. Demonstrate effective oral communication skills by teaching a lesson. 3. Through field experiences, case studies, and self analysis reflections, students will critically evaluate their role in teaching, issues and trends in education, and professional growth and behavior in the nature of teaching in the 21st century. ADO 9 4. As a learning community, students will problem solve, evaluate team members and collaborate with site supervisors as they explore the teaching profession. ADO 8 & 9 5. Demonstrate understanding of individual and group differences as it relates to teaching and learning by explaining how cultural diversity and appreciation is necessary for 21st century classroom. Cooper, 11th Edition 2. How to Develop a Professional Portfolio 4th Ed. by Campbell and Wyman 3. EDU 100 Course Pack available only at the JCC bookstore  Please Note: I will not always be discussing direct text reading assignments and materials. Application and synthesis of content will be utilized throughout the course. It is a student responsibility to read course materials. (Sorry if I have offended you on this, but really, some students forget this point.) Units/topics of Instruction - Explore learning styles and the nature of teaching ADO 9 Working in Small Groups - Begin development of professional teaching portfolio - Examine and explore pre-K through12 roles of a professional teacher ADO 8 Personal and Ethical Responsibility - Begin site visits in pre-K12 classrooms with reflective analysis ADO 8 Personal and Ethical Responsibility - Develop professional vocabulary - Investigate pathways of profession and establish plan - Develop an understanding of professional behavior JCC ADO 8 Personal and Ethical Responsibility - Identify and value the importance of ongoing personal and professional growth - Experience and discuss cultural diversity - Explore and establish professional resources for pathway - Explore issues and trends in the teacher profession including topics such as: classroom management, integrity, lifelong learning, current curriculum, instructional strategies, assessment - Integrate technology resources and skills in all course workEDU 100 Syllabus Winter 09 4 4 Technology will be part of the course. Students will be guided and supported in using technology. Teachers need technology skills for today’s classrooms. Instructional Techniques and Procedures Students in this course will experience best practice through a variety of technique and procedures including: oral presentations internet technology video taping reflective feedback field trips guest speakers field experiences research cooperative groups personal analyses, team teaching critical analysis assessment case studies cultural experiences The focus will be strong engagement as a “learning community” with fellow students and instructors and area teachers and schools.  Participation Requirements: There are three components of graded participation in this course. The first is face-to-face class participation, the second is on-line participation and the third is field experience participation. Please keep in mind face-to-face participation is worth 10 points each full class attended. Points will be reduced if a student arrives late, leaves early, uses cell phone, texting, wears a hat, and exhibits other unprofessional behavior occurs during class. I would expect the same professionalism of all students during site participation. As a requirement of this course,
