NSM 151 College Algebra Credits 4 credit hours 4 contact hours Instructor Michael Sandelin e mail msandelin glenoaks edu Phone 269 294 4350 Office G 213 Hours M 3 00 5 30 T 12 30 1 00 W 3 00 5 00 Text College Algebra and Trigonometry 7th Edition Aufman Barker and Nation Thomson Brooks Cole Recommended Graphing calculator Preferably something from TI Course Description This course is an extension of Intermediate Algebra Topics covered will include polynomials exponential functions logarithmic functions modeling trigonometric functions and conic sections This course is preparation for higher level courses in mathematics beginning with calculus Course Outcomes Students successfully completing this course will be able to Find roots of polynomials Graph polynomials Solve exponential and logarithmic equations Use modeling to find equations for sets of data Understand the basic principles of trigonometry Graph sine and cosine functions Graph parabolas ellipses and hyperbolas Method of Instruction Instruction will consist of lecture group work and discussion Students are encouraged to ask questions about material they find confusing After each test I will focus on any areas where multiple students struggled and clarify any confusion Attendance Attendance is required daily DO NOT miss any test days As class attendance is ESSENTIAL to success in this course there will be no make up of tests or the final exam Students who miss 15 of class time roughly 9 class periods may be dropped from the course Evaluation Homework 20 due the first day of class each week Chaper Tests Chapters 2 7 Total of 60 Final Exam 20 Homework is always due on the first day of class each week You are required to do every other odd numbered problem in each section that we finish in a given week To achieve a passing grade students should hand in EVERY assignment Any work handed in after the due date will be considered late Work handed in one class day late will receive half credit and work handed in later
