CH301 Information Sheet to Use Until My Web Site is Found 1. I usually run a paperless course and simply point you to a web site. But I am being relocated to a different server this fall and I can’t find my course yet. No doubt this will be remedied soon but in the mean time, use this handout to direct you in accomplishing what needs to be done before class next Tuesday. 2. You need to purchase my Atkins Jones textbook. It is actually sold through an electronic portal that provides a lot of additional services including providing a data bank of practice problems, communications capabilities, etc. On the other side of this page are the instructions for purchasing the portal. The cost is about $60 for a one-semester subscription or $93 for the full year. Which to choose? It depends on whether you will be taking my course next spring, but I can tell you that historically about 400 of the 500 students continue. 3. To make the purchase, simply follow the step by step instructions on the back of this page. If you have problems making the purchase, the folks at the 1-800 number are really good at helping you (much better than me, since I will tell you to call them.) I recommend making the purchase ASAP but certainly by Sunday evening as that is when I will transition to the portal and all my e-mail will originate from inside it. 4. Until Sunday night I will be using UT’s Blackboard to contact you. You should have received two e-mails from me through Blackboard already. The first was sent on Saturday the 22nd at 5:42 pm and told you about my course textbook. The second was sent this morning and included my syllabus as an attachment. If you did not receive these e-mails then you are either not registered for the course or the e-mail you gave the university is not the same as the one you use. Either way, it is important to fix these problems. 5. As mentioned, I provided you a syllabus for the course. It is pretty long but tells you everything you need to know about how the class runs. Please refer to it often as you come up to speed on class operation. 6. I sell a course packet for about $30 that also serves as a fund raiser for the UT scholarships. The course packet is basically a download of 400 pages of course notes I have written, all of last year’s quizzes and exams, and all of last year’s worksheets, complete with solutions. You can find most of this material on the web (except for the old exams and quizzes) but as a bound course packet it is a handy inexpensive way to have available reference to what I use to teach the course. 7. ALEKS Math. At this point all that matters is that if you have not either completed a college-level pre-calculus or calculus course, or earned at least a grade of 50 on the ALEKS Math diagnostic, you will be kicked out of the course. You have until the 4th class day to do so. There aren’t many in this category, but if you are, you need to tend to business ASAP. 8. ALEKS Chemistry. 5% of your course grade is earned by completing ALEKS Chemistry with a grade of 70. You earn your first 3% by simply completing the diagnostic by the 5th class day (Tuesday) and you then have till the 40th class day to earn the score you want. We will be giving a series of lectures to help you with weak performance areas, so pay attention for announcements on the lectures. 9. We will post the first worksheet for the semester on Sunday evening. It will cover material from the first half of chapter 1 in Atkins Jones. Usually I post to my web site but since its availability is uncertain I will send it as an attachment through a Blackboard e-mail. 10. Office hours start next week. My office hour on Monday the 31st at 2 pm is in my office. 11. I will send a final e-mail though Blackboard on Sunday morning with an update for the class and the worksheet. After that, everything will come through the portal. So in a nutshell: purchase the portal, read the syllabus, get your ALEKS stuff done, start the first worksheet, and of course, feel free to e-mail me with any questions at [email protected],edu.Accessing Your ChemPortal Course Accompanying Chemical Principles, Fourth Edition by Peter Atkins and Loretta Jones W.H.
