HitlerCurrent LectureAnnouncement: Holocaust Survivor comes Tuesday March 18th- Russians drop out of WWI by a treatyo Treaty of Brest- Litovsk- Congress denied Wilson of the Treaty of Versailles- Germans are stuck with large payments to the Frencho They print more money which leads to hyperinflationo Hyperinflation until 1923 The US stops it by sending a group of bankers led by Dawes (Dawes Act) - They sweep up all the money and create new money system- Germans DO NOT owe the US money because they didn’t ratify the Treaty of Versailles- US felt that if they straighten out German economy they will be able to send money to British and French who will pay the US better- 1929 US Stock Market Crash- United Stateso Turns very conservative after the warThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Harding (1920-1924)- Died mysteriously on a ship- First Death Certificate states “Shell Fish Poisoning”- Second Death Certificate states “Heart attack”- It is said that his wife murdered him so that he wouldn’t see him administration go down in flames- His entire cabinet except 2 went to jail Blamed the WWI on Democrats b/c Woodrow Wilson was Democrato Calvin Coolidge elected 1924  “silent Cal”o Herbert Hover elected 1928 Engineer from Stanford Multi millionaire, didn’t take a salary o Big business returns 1922 strike down Child Labor laws  Prohibition is passed and last until 1933o 1920-1930 “A Boom Decade” Making lots of money Congress and Presidents are very Republican Easy for people to make money The rise of the “hoodlums” - Al Capone made large amounts of money- Europeo The Nazi’s Product of the 1920’s1. National (Germany only)2. Roman (symbols come from Ancient Rome)3. Male movement4. Convinced Germany that they were part of an ancient tribe: Aryans5. Hated the Jews a. .07% of German population are Jewish b. Jews are “stingy”6. Worship the Volk7. Master producers of “stuff”o Hitler Didn’t get into Art School and blamed the Jews He was born and grew up in Austrian- Dictators are often not born in the country they dictate  Father was an alcoholic and abusive Hitler spent his mother’s pension Goes to Germany He was a message deliver in the war He was never promoted and became angry His first job in Munich was a spy- Went from group to group and wrote reports He joined one group called NSDAP- “National Socialists German Workers
