General InformationCOT 4810 - Topics in Computer Science, Fall 2011.Class: M, Wd, F 8:30 - 9:20 AM, ENG0383Instructor: Dan C. Marinescu Email:[email protected] Hours: M, W 9:20-10:20 AM. Office Location: HEC 304.TA: Khurram Soomro. Email:[email protected]: HEC 308 Office hours: M, Wd 10-11 AMClass objectives: The rapid pace of the developments in all areas of Computer Science andComputer Engineering requires the ability to read and analyze critically the technical litera-ture, technical reports, patents, and so on. Equally important is the ability to write scientificpapers and research proposals if you plan an academic career, or technical reports and pro-posals in an industrial environment. Many students enrolled in this class will graduate so onthus, the need to develop and test these skills; this is precisely the objective of this class.Class organization:Each student is expected to:1. Search the literature for the influential papers in the area selected for presentation andread them carefully. A student involved in undergraduate research is encouraged to selecttopics close to his/her research area.2. Make 2 (two) presentation on topics of his/her choice.3. Write an overview paper on each of the two topics presented.4. Evaluate each presentation using the attached form.5. Write a paper on ethical issues in Computer Science.6. Write a paper on the impact of technological changes and the role of Computer Science.Table 1: The grading schemeItem WeightEvaluation of the first presentation (average of students reviews) 10%Overview paper for the first presentation 10%Evaluation of the second presentation (average of students reviews) 10%Overview paper for the second presentation 10%Reviews and evaluations of other student presentations 20%Paper on ethical issues in Computer Science (CS) 20%Paper on the impact of technological changes and the role of CS 20%Total 100 %Read carefully and follow the following rules: all papers and reviews should be written inWord and the drawings should be done in Visio. The presentations should be made in Pow-erpoint with all the drawings in Visio. Presentations and papers related to the presentation.(a) The deadline for the selection of topics is August 29, 10 AM. I suggest that youwork with the TA to find out the available dates; the dates will be assigned basedon FCFS basis. On Monday August 22 I will ask for volunteers for the second weekof classes; if there are no volunteers I will randomly choose six students.(b) Each student is expected to Email the slides of the presentations to the TAwith the subject “COT4810-S1-Lastname” and “COT4810-S2-Lastname”, re-spectively, no later than 6 PM the day prior to the scheduled presentation.Presentations cannot be rescheduled; failure to make the presentation at the sched-uled time automatically lowers the grade by 10%. The average score from thestudent reviews will be communicated within two weeks of the week of the presen-tation.(c) A presentation should last about 15 minutes and allow 10 minutes for questions. There are two presentation for each 50 minute session1. You get extra points forleading such a free discussion.(d) The length of the paper should be 2-3 pages. The paper should summarize thenovel ideas and, if it makes sense, the potential impact and ethical aspects ofthe work discussed. The paper should be Emailed to [email protected] with thesubject “COT4810-P1-Lastname” and “COT4810-P2-Lastname”, resp ectively, nolater than 6 PM the day prior to the scheduled presentation; the grade will becommunicated within two weeks of the week of the presentation.2. Reviews of class presentations.(a) A student can submit a review only if he/she attended the presentation; obviously, the presenter does not review his own presentation.(b) The reviews should follow the format of the attached form and should be objective, brief, and professional.(c) The reviews for the six presentations given in a certain week are due on Tuesdaythe week following the presentations.(d) The grade you get for your reviews of the presentations of your colleagues will onlybe available at the end of the semester; it will be an average of individual reviews.3. Paper on ethical issues in Computer Science. The paper should be Emailed to [email protected] with the subject “COP4810-Ethics-Lastname” no later than MondayNovember 14, 8 AM.This paper should be 3-4 pages and should cover what you learned about laws regardingdigital information; address the issues of plagiarism, property rights, security; discusshow your knowledge could affect the social impact of new technologies; discuss how theabuse of your knowledge could negatively affect the society at large and the researchcommunity. Other comments and ideas.1A free discussion on a topic of interest will take place when one of the 66 slots (11 weeks x 3 sessions aweek x 2 slots p er session) is not filed up by the presenter.24. Paper on the impact of technological changes on the society and the role of Com-puter Science. The paper should be Emailed to the [email protected] with the subject“COP4810-Impact-Lastname” no later than Monday November 21, 8 AM.The length of the paper should be 3-4 pages. Give examples on the evolution of tech-nologies in terms of performance, cost, and functionality; discuss the impact of theinformation revolution on the society, the good, the bad, and the ugly; analyze the roleof the technology and of the theory.Literature:The Literature document on the class Web site provides links to several classical andsurvey papers. For example, a student who chooses to make a presentation related to Turingawards could discuss the contribution of one of the recipients of the Turing award. Keep inmind that the presentations must have technical depth. An additional literature file is alsoavailable.Class attendance and grading: The students are strongly encouraged to attend every class andbe active. Our policy is simple, based on professional standards: you are welcome to workwith anyone else on ideas and understanding, but the writing should be your own and youshould carefully acknowledge all contributions of ideas by others, whether
