Term PaperEEP 131Fall 2006The term paper is a major part of this course (45% of the grade). Thepaper can be no longer than 12 pages, not including bibliography, title page,or any appendices that you wish to include. Please use the following format:12 point fon t, regular margins, double spacing. The paper m ust also containa title page (not nu mbered) that contains y our name, the title of you r paper,a 100 w ord (or less) abstract, and keywords. The page num bered "1" is thefirst page of the text of your paper, N OT the title page.In both of your progress reports and in your final p aper, I want you toitalicize your thesis stateme n t. (This sometim es called a "topic sen ten ce"; itgives the reader a quick idea of what y our paper is going to be about.)By careful to attribute all sources. Plagiarism is one of the worst formsof academ ic dishonesty. If in doubt, cite. (Don’t go crazy. If you takea bunch of information in a single paragraph from one source, but do notquote, one citation is enough. You don’t ha v e to use a cite for each sentence.)Footnotes can be used (sparingly) to explain a point that y o u w ant to leaveout of the main text. Do not use footnotes for cites (as is done in la wjournals). W hen y ou refer to a source in y our text, use the following formatin the text: "Smith (2002) states that.." If y ou use a cite to suppor t astatement, or as a basis for a summary, y ou can write what you wa n t to sa yand then write (Smith, 2002) in parent heses after your discussion. This is awa y of making an attribution without using a direct quote.Your bibliogr aphy should be alphabetical b y last name of first author, and eac h en try should be in the follo w ing form:For a journal articleSmith, Susan (ye ar) "Title of P a per", Title of Journal Volume and pagenumber. For a book:Smith, Susan, (year) Title of bookPublisher, CityFor a w e b articleSmith, Susan (year) w eb address. (Note: If somethin g is published ina journal, but y ou obtained the article from the web, e.g. from the coursewebpage or from an online source such as JSTOR , you must cite using thejournal info, not the web address.1You are free to choose the subject of the paper, pro vided that it concernsan enviro nm ental issue that is affected by globalization. The topic need notbe one that is directly covered in the cour se. The course webpage containsexamples of studen t papers from 2004 and 2005.Here are some examples of general topics that you could refine into a termpaper topic:• Some aspect of an in ternational en v ironm ental agreement (e.g., CITES ,the Basel Con ven tion , the Montreal P rotocol).• The effect of cultivation of a cash crop (e.g. coffee, cashews) on theen viro nm ent in developin g coun tries.• The en viron m ental and trade effects of (specific) agricultural subsidies(e.g., cotton).• The effect of eco-labelling on consumption or production.• The effect of a specific trade ban (e.g. on ivory); the pro’s and con’s ofthe trade ban.• Environmental effects of aquaculture, and relation to trade.• Trade in genetically modified (GM) commodities.• The relation bet ween immigration and the en vironment (e.g., the recentSierra Club con tro versy)• A comparison of the globalization views of different en viro nm entalgroups• Methods of mana ging common property resources and the effects onthese methods of economic integration. In general, it is a good idea to pick a rather narro w topic for y our paper.Giv en the page restriction and the fact that the paper is due in December,it w ou ld be difficult to write an in teresting paper on a general topic. Casestudies lend themselves to this time and space constrain t. However, youcould write a literatur e review on a more general topic, if you wish. The grade will depend prim arily on con tent. How ever, clarit y, syntax, gram m ar, spelling and organization are also very important. Com m on mis-tak es include:2• Incom plete or run-on sen tences• Non-agreement of subject and verb (plural and singular)• Erratic chang es in tense of verbs• MisspellingsSc hedule: I w ant y ou to hand in t wo progress reports and the final paper.(Ev e rything has to be typed.)1. The first progress report is due O ctober 19 in class (or by 5PM in mymailbo x in 207 Giannini Hall) Th is report should be approxim atelyhalf a page. It should consist of a brief description of your topic, withat least two references. The description should include a question thatmotivates you r pa per. You can keep it general at this point. Writegrammatically. Do not use "telegraphic style".2. The second progress report is due Nov ember 16 in class (or by 5PMin m y ma ilbox in 207 Giannini H all). This report sh ould be appro x-imately one page, plus at least five references. It should inclu de adescription of the topics that your paper will discuss. I w ant to seesome evidence that y ou are thinking about the paper, and refining yourtopic.3. The final paper is due b y Mond ay December 11 in my m ailbox .The progress reports will be graded satisfactory/unsatisfactory. If y oudecide at some poin t that you wan t to ch an ge y our topic, yo u need to discussthe c h ange with me, and hand in new progress reports.Importan t: Whenyouhandinyoursecondprogressreport, attachyourfirst report (which I will ha v e handed back to y ou). W hen you hand in y ourfin al paper, attac h both progress reports.3Penalty for late progress rep o rts or late papers: Each 2 da y (or part ofthat time) dela y in handing in either progress report, and each one da y dela yin handing in your final paper, costs 1/3 of a grade off the grade for the finalpaper. For example, a one or t w o da y delay in handing in a progress reportwould cause an A- paper to become a B+ paper.Em ergency extensions: Sometim e s a n emergency justifies an extension. These will be h and led on a case-by-case basis. Ev en if y ou are granted anemergency extension you have to hand in your existing notes on the paper. For example , a family emergency might prev ent you from com plet ing y o u rpaper on time. Howev er, that emergency would not explain a failure to havedone a reasonable amount of work on the paper up to that poin
