COURSE OUTLINERevised 9/11/2014 1 COURSE OUTLINE NURS-140 ADVANCED CONCEPTS IN PRACTICAL NURSING 5 Semester Hours HOWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE Description This course will prepare the practical nurse student to provide direct and indirect care for individuals of all ages experiencing more complex health care problems resulting from the major responses to stress (obstruction, immobility, infection, bleeding and alteration in perception). The student will explore the role of the practical nurse in health care and utilize the steps of the nursing process to provide safe nursing care to a small group of patients. Experience in managing the care provided by auxiliary nursing personnel will be integrated into clinical assignments. Prerequisites: NURS-134 and NURS-135, PSYC-101, ENGL-121. (3 hours theory, 2 hours lab). Overall Course Objectives Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Utilize knowledge of pathophysiology to prevent and/or minimize health care problems. 2. Collaborate with the health care team members, patients and significant support persons in acute, long-term care, and community-based settings to manage acute and chronic illness. 3. Participate in activities that promote nursing practice and continued educational development. 4. Utilize the concepts associated with the five areas of patient needs and aspects of nursing care to promote holistic care and continuity of care. 5. Demonstrate nursing practice that reflects caring, integrity, and principles of safe practice. 6. Individualize application of the nursing process utilizing critical thinking to facilitate optimum care and patient adaptation. 7. Manage nursing care with attention to professional practice, legal standards and ethical principles. 8.
