The course involves online activities, written assignments and teaching in the Super Saturday program. The course can be taken for 1, 2, or 3 credit hours. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Increase candidate knowledge about characteristics and needs of gifted and talented learners. INTASC 1, 2, 3, 4; CEC S1, 2, 3; PMPP U1, U4.* Increase candidate instructional and productive skills related to gifted education (e.g. designing curriculum, developing lesson plans, conducting a lesson, assessment tools, etc.). INTASC 6, 7, 8; CEC S4, 5, 7, 8, 10, PMPP U3, U5, U 6, U7.* Develop skill in evaluating and applying knowledge from the readings and discussions on gifted education. INTASC 6; CEC S9; PMPP G1, G2.* * Denotes INTASC Principles, CEC Standards for Beginning Special Education Teachers of Students with Gifts and Talents, and Purdue Model of Professional Preparation Principles addressed in this course. REQUIREMENTS FOR ONE CREDIT HOUR. Read all the assigned readings, actively participate in online discussions, provide feedback on the microteaching videos, and write reflections on the weekly readings.2 Submit the course outline and 9 lesson plans for your Super Saturday class. Develop a Stage 3 Assessment Plan. Submit 2 microteaching videos of your Super Saturday class. REQUIREMENTS FOR TWO CREDIT HOURS. Read all the assigned readings, actively participate in online discussions, provide feedback on the microteaching videos, and write reflections on the weekly readings. Submit the course outline and 9 lesson plans for your Super Saturday class. Develop a Stage 3 Assessment Plan. Submit 2 microteaching videos Super Saturday class. Select a topic related to giftedness and write a Final Reflection Paper or create a Final Notebook with resources for teaching gifted students. REQUIREMENTS FOR THREE CREDIT HOURS. Read all the assigned readings, actively participate in online discussions, provide feedback on the microteaching videos, and write reflections on the weekly readings. Submit the course outline and 9 lesson plans for your Super Saturday class. Develop a Stage 3 Assessment Plan. Submit 3 microteaching videos Super Saturday class. Select a topic related to giftedness and write a Final Reflection Paper and create a Final Notebook with resources for teaching gifted students. ASSIGNMENTS: Super Saturday Course Outline Give an overview of your nine-week unit and over-arching theme for your Super Saturday class (see Course Outline rubric for requirements). Lesson Plans You will design, and submit for evaluation, 9 detailed lesson plans (one for each session of your Super Saturday Class). Required format and example of lesson plans template will be posted on WebCT Vista. Videotapes: The purpose of the videos is to allow you to view and critique your own teaching performance, and to receive feedback from your instructor and classmates. You will videotape yourself in your classroom for 10-15 minutes 2 times during the Super Saturday semester (see Microteaching Videos rubric for details). Reflections On Weekly Readings:3 The reflection readings will be assigned and evaluated weekly and will involve 2-3 open-ended questions. The purpose of the weekly reflections is to help you apply the knowledge gained from the readings. Participation in the Online Discussions Participation in the discussion will involve asynchronous online discussions of the weekly readings and feedback on the microteaching videos. Discussion of additional issues initiated by any class participant is encouraged. Active participation is expected. Stage 3 Assessment Plan The purpose of the plan is to provide students and parents with a timeline and rubric for the final project of your Super Saturday class (see rubric for details). Final Reflection Paper The Final Reflection Paper is an option for those registered for 2 credits and is required for the students who take the class for 3 credit hours. It will provide an opportunity to choose a topic of interest within the gifted education field and gain additional knowledge in the chosen area. The paper will be based on additional self-selected readings that are relevant to your professional interests. It should include a succinct thesis statement, short summary of the readings, reaction to the reading, and suggested application in one’s personal educational practice (see rubric for details). Final Notebook Final Notebook is an option for those registered for 2 credits and is required for the students who take the class for 3 credit hours. The purpose of this assignment is to help you collect the resources that will be useful for you as a teacher of gifted and talented learners. You can create your Final Notebook as a resource for the class you plan to teach in the GERI Super Saturday Program or for teaching GT students in the regular classroom in the future (see rubric for details). Final Exam There will be no final exam for this course. Many of the materials for these assignments are available in the Shared Information Services Library. This library is sponsored jointly by the Indiana Department of Education and the Gifted Education Resource Institute. It is housed on the third floor of BRNG in rooms 3244-3248 and is open 10:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. except during the lunch hour. The phone number for SIS is 494-1887 or 1-800-347-2948.
