Prefix Number Hrs. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Examines artificial and natural lighting in interior design. Considers environmental comfort, effects on colors, and information required for selection of lamps and fixtures. Acquaints student with the basic calculation methods as they relate to the lighting design process. Prerequisite: IND 101 with grades of ā€œCā€ or better TOPICAL OUTLINE: I. Terminology II. Types of lamps a. Incandescent b. Fluorescent c. H.I.D. III. Types of fixtures and control of light a. Lenses b. Diffusers c. Color filters d. Ballasts IV. Color effects of lighting V. Field trip to lighting showroom VI. Preparation of reflected ceiling plans VII. Factors which influence lighting calculations METHODS OF PRESENTATION: Lecture, demonstration, field trips, critiques. STUDENT OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course the student should: 1. Review the factors involved in lighting design including: light sources, their applications, quantities, and color effects. 2. View the use of natural and artificial light in interior design. Draw reflected ceiling plans which work within the projects guidelines and meet the clients needs and provide A. accent lighting B. ambient lighting C. task lighting 4. Utilize good hand-drafting or computer drafting and lettering skills to accurately produce the reflected ceiling plans and other drawings required in the classroom. 5. Identify lamps and fixtures, which are suitable to solve a design problem. 6. Design reflected ceiling plans for residential and commercial spaces. 7. Balance the information needed in your reflected ceiling plan on the page including a. key of fixtures (luminaries) b. dimensioning c. notes d. title block 8. Make a print of the reflected ceiling plan. 9. Identify the different colorations of lamps and the concepts of Kelvin temperature and CRI. 10. Compare the appearance of colored items under different light sources. 11. Classify the type of lighting products required to provide light for A. task lighting B. ambient lighting C. accent lighting D. living room lighting E. bathroom lighting F. office lighting 12. Understand what information is required to calculate the amount of light required for a space. 13. Develop a vocabulary of lighting terms and utilize these in discussions and presentations. 14. Participate in classroom discussions 15. Give verbal presentations in class. METHODS OF EVALUATION: Successful completion of assigned reflected ceiling project and lighting calculation project.
