Chabot College Fall 2010 Course Outline for Early Childhood Development 85 MENTOR SEMINAR Fall Catalog Description 85 Mentor Seminar Fall 5 unit This seminar is part of the statewide California Early Childhood Mentor Teacher program Beginning early childhood Mentor teachers attend monthly seminars to explore issues related to their new role as supervisors of early childhood student teachers Seminar content will be individualized to meet the needs of each Mentor Pre requisite ECD 83 Adult Supervision This seminar is only open to current California Early Childhood Mentor Teachers 9 hours Typical contact hours 9 Prerequisite Skills Before entering the course the student should be able to 1 2 3 4 5 6 Identify and compare the developmental stages of teachers directors and mentee s explain methods of integrating mentees and other adults into the classroom distinguish the different roles of mentors with children families colleagues and mentees assess the ethical and professional responsibilities of mentor mentee relationship demonstrate an understanding of culturally sensitive communication skills develop a plan of action using quality environmental rating tools for classroom improvement and enrichment 7 create a professional portfolio Expected Outcomes for Students Upon completion of the course the student should be able to 1 2 3 4 5 recognize and model professional behavior with student teachers recognize and support developmental stages of student teachers through mentoring facilitate positive interactions between student teachers children parents and other staff analyze and discuss current Early Childhood issues develop a personal professional growth plan Course Content 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Professionalism and ethics Mentoring Working with colleagues student teachers and parents Early Childhood Issues Developing and supporting personal and professional growth Strategies for change Communication with coworkers Diversity training Methods of Presentation 1 2 3 4 Lecture and
