JCC e-mail: [email protected] Text: Interpersonal Messages. J.A. DeVito. 2nd Edition Center for Student Success: 517-796-8415 Solution Center: 517-796-8639 JCC Switchboard: 517-787-0800 JCC AT Vo-Tech: 517-268-5515 Course Description: This course is designed to provide you with knowledge that will enable you to communicate effectively and efficiently at home, work, and school. Participation will build skills, increase politeness, increase you awareness of the role culture plays in our interpersonal interactions. Also, improve your communications skills (e.g. building relationships; group interaction, conflict management, etc.). This course will increase your self confidence in doing face to face presentations and public speaking. Performance Objectives: The course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. Associate Degree Outcomes guarantee that students achieve the goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs. The ADOs and course objectives addressed in this class include the following: ADO 2: Individuals will speak clearly, concisely, and intelligibly. ADO 9: Individuals will work effectively in small groups. Course Requirements: Homework: Students will be assigned readings that will be discussed during class periods. Students are expected to complete the assigned readings before coming to class, and given its nature, students are expected to actively participate in class discussion. Everyone is expected to participate in the in-class assignments. Course Guidelines: 1. Please come to class prepared, on-time, ready to learn, and ready to participate. The success of the class as well as each student depends on preparation and willingness to engage in our time together.2. If you come to class late, please come in as quietly as possible to avoid disrupting other students and the instructor. Chronic tardiness will result in a deduction from the student’s attendance/participation points. 3. A sign-in sheet will be passed around at the beginning of each class session. It is the student’s responsibility to sign the attendance sheet. Otherwise you will not receive credit for being in class if you do not sign in. 4. PLEASE SILENCE YOUR CELL PHONES DURING CLASS. If you need to keep your cell phone on put it on vibrate in case of a family emergency or other circumstances. Please bring this to my attention before class, and if you need to answer your phone during class exit the classroom. Any student using his/her cell phone during class will be asked to leave, resulting in a loss of participation points for the day. 5. Do not bring or use your laptop in class. Surfing the Internet, checking e mail, facebook, twittering, blogging, gaming, or chatting on a computer in class interferes with your time to learn as well as your fellow students’. Any student using his/her laptop for the above purposes during class time will be asked to leave, resulting in a loss of participation points for the day. 6. I don’t mind if you bring a snack or a drink with you to class, but please be as quiet as possible so as not to disrupt other students. 7. If you need to use the facilities during class, please feel free to do so. Please leave and come back as quietly as possible so as not to disrupt others. 8. Assignments are to be typed and proofread, please! 9. I will communicate with you outside class via your JCC e mail account and none other. Therefore, I strongly encourage you to check your JCC e mail account often. Late Work Policy: It is expected that assignments will be turned in on time. However, if you cannot turn them in on time, contact the instructor immediately. Attendance: Given the importance of oral participation in speech classes, daily attendance is vital if the student’s grade is not to be affected. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, more than two absences per semester will result in a lower grade. In addition, the student must not be absent for speeches, or presentations unless s/he has previously informed the instructor and made arrangements to take the test or present the speech at a mutually convenient time. If the student has not arranged something with the instructor, the missed presentation is a zero. Ethics: All work submitted must be your own. Failing to document sources in both oral and written assignments are considered plagiarism. Students found plagiarizing will be dealt with according to JCC’s policy on academic honesty.Policy Statement: Academic honesty is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others' work as their own, either by plagiarism, by cheating or by helping others to do so. Plagiarism: is the failure to give credit for the use of material from outside sources. Plagiarism includes but is not limited to: Using data, quotations, or paraphrases from other sources without adequate documentation Submitting other's work as your own Exhibiting other behaviors generally considered unethical Cheating means obtaining answers/material from an outside source without authorization. Cheating includes, but is not limited to: - Plagiarizing in all forms - Using notes/books without authorization - Copying - Submitting others' work as your own or submitting your work for others - Altering graded work - Falsifying data - Exhibiting other behaviors generally considered unethical Collaboration: While JCC encourages students to collaborate in study groups, work teams, and with lab partners, each student should take responsibility for accurately representing his/her own contribution. Consequences/Procedures: Faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonesty may penalize the student by taking appropriate action up to and including assigning a failing grade for the paper, project, report, exam, or the course itself. Instructors must document all instances of academic dishonesty beyond those of a very minor nature, in writing to the academic dean. The Office of the Academic Deans will
