The focus is primarily on the acute care setting. The course gives in depth knowledge and principles for patient education that includes primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of prevention. This course builds upon knowledge gained in prerequisite courses and applies principles of physiology and pathophysiology to the diverse health care alterations of the adult. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student will: 1. Identify strategies to assist adult individuals, families, groups, communities and populations (Client) to maintain and promote healthy behaviors. 2. Apply ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice including Standards of Care and Standards of Professional Performance to nursing care of adult clients. 3. Identify therapeutic nursing interventions for adult clients in multiple settings that promote, maintain and restore health. 4. Analyze relationship-centered care, identifying the use of professional boundaries, therapeutic communication, and culturally sensitive care. 5. Incorporate critical thinking, reflection, and problem-solving skills in the application of the nursing process with adult clients. 6. Describe the impact of evidence-based nursing on the art and science of nursing. 7. Teach health promotion, maintenance, and restoration for culturally diverse adult clients in multiple settings. 8. Explain the application of the goals of Healthy People 2010 with adult clients. 9. Discuss legal/ethical principles and current trends in health care of adults.NURS 316 Syllabus.SP09 Course Competencies: At the completion of NURS 316/318, the nursing student will: Communication 1. Teach adult individuals, families, and groups health promotion, maintenance, and restoration. 2. Collaborate with the health care team. 3. Communicate pertinent patient data through verbalization and documentation, using professional language. Critical Thinking 1. Use critical thinking to prioritize and perform safe adult care in a variety of settings based on appropriate data collection. 2. Evaluate and alter therapeutic interventions or plan of care based on data collection. Therapeutic Nursing Intervention 1. Assume increasing responsibility and accountability for nursing decisions.
