UPP 594 TOPICS IN URBAN PLANNING AND POLICY PLANNING FOR AN URBAN ECOLOGY INPUT ENVIRONMENT IE SUN OTHER ENERGY MATERIALS AND ORGANISMS PROCESSED ENERGY AND MATERIALS OUTPUT ENVIRONMENT OE URBAN SPRING SEMESTER 2006 E C O LO GY 1 UPP 594 TOPICS IN URBAN PLANNING AND POLICY PLANNING FOR AN URBAN ECOLOGY COURSE DESCRIPTION This interdisciplinary course is intended for graduate students in the Urban Planning and Policy UPP program as a learning experience in the tenets of sustainable planning Coupled with this course will be a real world planning application in which students will develop environmentally sustainable planning standards for use by the Village of Oak Park in their review and development of an updated Comprehensive Plan The course takes an ecological and systems approach to planning viewing the community as analogous to an eco system An assessment of the urban ecology will be defined in terms of energy and material flows that occur within the interrelated human and natural pathways throughout the urban environs From this assessment students will determine the ecological footprint and carrying capacity of the Village of Oak Park This will allow students to model and evaluate various planning scenarios and then decide upon appropriate planning goals and objectives In order to achieve these objectives students will develop planning strategies organized under the following five primary variables of land water air energy and materials Land physical environmental site planning native landscaping compact development reduced site disturbance alternative transportation etc Water hydrological management stormwater management innovative wastewater technologies and water efficient landscaping Air pollution emission reduction carbon sequestration heat island effect Energy energy performance and efficiency renewable energy building placement and orientation Materials solid waste management building reuse local and recycled content materials LEARNING OBJECTIVES
