Classes will meet in Hagg Sauer 228 (Secondfloor on the NORTH Hallway. Hint: the ITV room is on the SOUTH hallway.)FIELD SITE MEETINGS:Fall semester we will hold two on site meetings at your field agency. The first is a meeting toreview the draft of your Learning Contract. I will be available during the week of September18, 2006. I am available Sept 18 (am); Sept 19 (am &pm); Sept 20 (am &pm); and Sept 21 (am&pm). Your Learning Contract Draft is due at this meeting. You will have time after the meetingto make necessary changes. You need to turn in a final copy by class October 16.The second meeting on site will be your mid term evaluation during the week of December 11,2006. I am available December 11 (am) December 12 (am &pm); December 13 (am &pm); andDecember 14 (am &pm). Your on site and MSW supervisors should be in attendace.COURSE DESCRIPTION (4.0 - 8.0 cr [max 8.0 cr]; Prereq-& 8031 or 8332 or 8443 or 8544, SW Grad Student and #; S-N or Aud,fall, spring, summer, every year)Developing knowledge and skill base for "advanced generalist" practice in a community agency.Concurrent seminar focuses on integrating classroom theories and intervention methodologies withexperiences with client systems at micro, mezzo, and macro levels of practice. Attention tovulnerable/minority issues.COURSE OBJECTIVESThe student is expected to do the following in the field placement: Demonstrate advanced mezzo practice skills to address issues at the organizational level of practiceby engaging in administrative, program development, organizational change and/or supervisoryactivities. Demonstrate advanced macro practice skills by addressing complex issues through communitydevelopment, social action, social planning, and/or systemic change strategies to advance social andeconomic justice. Demonstrate advanced micro practice skills which address complex issues with individuals,families and/or small groups. Incorporate appropriate theory and research findings into one’s own practice at all three levels. Demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills at all levels of advanced practice. Demonstrate the ability to analyze policy issues and assess their impact on practice at all levels ofadvanced social work practice.FIELD PLACEMENTS BEGIN THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 5, 2006SW 8802: Fall 2006 G. WilimekPage 2 Demonstrate the ability to conduct evaluations, integrating principles learned in their MSWcoursework, at a direct practice, organizational and community level. Identify and apply social work values and ethics at a micro, mezzo, and macro level of social workpractice. Demonstrate the ability to practice autonomously, be self-reflective, and incorporate feedback intoone’s professional practice. Demonstrate a professional level of competency in critical thinking skills and their expression inoral and written communications. Demonstrate a professional level of competence in the knowledge and skills relevant to issues ofhuman diversity (people of color, gay/lesbian/bi-sexual/transgender and other oppressedpopulations). Demonstrate culturally competent skills in assessment and intervention at a personal andorganizational level.TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODSCourse content is conveyed through development and completion of a learning contract, in-personevaluation meetings throughout the semester, journaling assignments, assigned readings, studentpresentations, and discussion and consultations within seminars. In the field the student learns byimmersion in the field agency, and through weekly supervision meetings with an MSW supervisor.Learning ContractA learning contract/plan must be developed in consultation with the MSW Field Supervisor andthe Field Liaison within the first two weeks of the beginning of the placement, and will bereviewed to evaluate progress at the midterm, and in a final evaluation at the end of the year.Field Placement EvaluationsYou will be responsible for setting up appointments with your Field Supervisor(s) and the FieldSeminar Instructor (Field Liaison) to review the learning contract at the beginning of the term, andto evaluate the your learning process at the mid-point and conclusion of the placement.JournalsYou will be required to keep a journal of your placement learning experience with weekly entries.In each weekly journal entry you will address the following:1. Learning Experiences: What learning activities did you participate in during theweek and what did you learn during the week in placement? It is important here tobe descriptive. Tell what you did, and what you observed. This is an exercise in“objectivity”, so save your opinions and feelings for the discussion in the“subjective” section.2. Subjective Responses: What were your personal thoughts, feelings, reactionsabout your learning experiences of the week? Here you can summarize the mostsalient responses you had… “I was bored by; I felt insecure with…I was remindedof…I felt angry at…I thought…I wondered if…” etc.3. Learning Application & Integration: In this section, you are assigned to findrelevant links between what you are doing in field and what you havelearned in your various classroom learning and reading. Be specific; name theoriesand concepts; give informal references; describe what you did or observed in thefield placement that either confirmed or challenged your “book and classroom”SW 8802: Fall 2006 G. Throughout the semester I will assign special topics for you to address inthis section of the journal.Please use initials or a code name when referring to clients in your journals.Journals should submitted by e-mail as attachments in Word Document format. I will read andcomment on your journals and e-mail them back to you weekly. Label your attachment as follows:GW Journal WK 3 (your initials, followed by Journal followed by the abbreviation WK andthe week number the journal refers to. ) Journals will be due at or before noon on
