This course is based on two fundamental ideas regarding the integration of digital and computer-based technologies in education:1. Teachers’ curricular and pedagogical practices determine to a large extent how well computers are used in education; and2. New technologies can help teachers learn and teach in new and more effective ways. Thus, effective curriculum and pedagogy for teaching diverse learners drive the use of technology in education, and effective computer-related processes and tools may equally influence teachers to teach in new ways. A primary purpose of EDUC 518 Technology and Pedagogy is to explore each of these ideas in turn in order to help participantsdevelop a synthesis of the ideas for their own learning and teaching practices.Rationale Related to the NMSU COE Conceptual Framework: This class prepares educators to meet the needs of diverse learners by requiring candidatesto effectively demonstrate the application of pedagogical knowledge, the use of appropriateassessment strategies, and the ability to reflect on practice in order to improve theirprofessional performance. This course is based on the key concepts of the framework - PREPARED: 1. Practitioners and Leaders (P1): Graduate students learn, describe, and practice key leadership, collaboration, and management skills they can use in their own classrooms, schools, districts, and/or other educational settings. They demonstrate skills of technology operations and concepts and use technology to enhance productivity and professional practice.2. Reflection (R1): Graduate students use reflective practices as a learning tool that supports thoughtful questioning and problem solving related to technology and pedagogy.3. Effectiveness (E1): Graduate students demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed for understanding, critiquing, and using local, state, and national content, process, and technology standards, current PreK-16 curriculum and pedagogical practices. Graduate students set goals for and demonstrate progress in the development of the dispositions identified by the NMSU Department of Curriculum and Instruction. They understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology for learning and apply those principles in practice. 4. Pedagogy (P2): Graduate students develop and use knowledge, skills, and dispositions that intersect the use of technology, pedagogy, and content to foster meaningful learning for students with whom they work. This includes investigating, planning, designing, and implementing technology rich learning environments and experiences. 5. Assessment (A): Graduate students develop and use assessment practices with technology to foster meaningful learning of students with whom they work. This includes investigation of selected technology and pedagogy that impact standards-based assessment of student learning. 6. Research (R2): Graduate students value the roles that research-based curriculum, pedagogy, and technologyplay in providing relevant and meaningful learning experiences for the students with whom they work. Thoughtful investigation into the processes of curriculum, pedagogy, and technology is a regular practice and is demonstrated in projects completed for the course.7. Evaluation (E2): Graduate students thoughtfully engage in formal and informal self-evaluation of their own professional development. They also participate in collaborative professional development opportunities as ways to continuously improve the integration of technology into teaching and learning practices. 8. Diversity (D): Graduate students understand, critique, and demonstrate the core principles of fostering cultural diversity (ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, gender, exceptionalities, language, religion, sexual orientation, and geographical perspectives). Graduate students consider culturally responsive curricula, pedagogy, and technology uses to be core components of learning environments and include a variety of perspectives in projects completed for the course. The goals of the course reflect standards established by the College of Education (COE), the state of New Mexico, and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). For COE assessment of proficiencies with the PREPARED knowledge, skills, and dispositions in this course, there will be focus on P1, E1, and P2. Department of Curriculum and Instruction Disposition Statement:Dispositions are the values, commitments, and professional ethics that influence behaviors
