AT 121 - Chapter 6 Lab 2 - Using a DVOM, What m, k, and M mean.Name: ______________________________________Date: _______________________________________The metric system, a means of standardization, is based on the number 10. Numbers with 12 or more zeros in them can be cumbersome, and both space- and time consuming. Therefore, a system of prefixesmakes calculations easier. These prefixes, together with their associated symbols and values are:TERM SYMBOL VALUEmilli m 1/1,000 (0.001)kilo K 1,000mega M 1,000,000Notice that prefixes for numbers greater than one are symbolized by capital letters, but symbols for prefixes of less than one are lower case letters. As shown in the chart above: to convert any value to mega, move the decimal point six places to the right; to convert any value to kilo, move the decimal point three places to the right; to convert any value to milli, move the decimal point three places to the left. The following list provides some examples of how prefixes would be used in conjunction with common circuit variables. The abbreviation provided with each example is the way that value would actually be written on schematics or other technical information.1mV = .001V1mA = .001A50mV = .050V500mV = .5V1,450 mV = 1.450V1K Ω = 1000 Ω (Funny how a car that sells for 1K = $1000!)1.2K Ω = 1,200 Ω.345K Ω = 345 Ω1MΩ = 1,000,000 Ω1.2MΩ = 1,200,000 Ω7M = 7,000,000 Ω.234MΩ = 234,000 ΩConvert the values to electrical units;1. .788 A equals how many milliamperes? ___788mA_____2. 0.0788 A equals how many milliamperes? ____78.8mA_________3. 50 mA equals how many amperes? ______.050A_________4. 110 mA equals how many amperes? _____.110A____________5. 7 A equals how many mA? ______7,000mA_________________6. 30 mA equals how many A?____.030A____7. .55 mA equals how many amperes?___.00055A_______8. 235,000,000 milliamperes equals many A? ____235,000A_____9. 12 V equals how many mV? ____12,000mV_________________10. 243 mV equals how many volts? _____0.243V____________111. 10 V equals how many millivolts? ______10,000mV________12. 3V equals how many kV? _____.003kV__________________13. 3mV equal how many volts?____.003V_______________14. 300 milivolts equal how many kilovolts? ______.0003kV______15. 32 k Ω equals how many Ω? ____32,000ohms_____________16. 32M Ω equals how many ohms? ____32,000,000ohms________17. 3500 ohms equals how many kΩ? ____3.5kOhms_____________18. 3.5 k Ω equals how many Ω? ____3500Ohms______________19. 2200 Ω equal how many kΩ? ___2.2KOhms___________________20. 1,000 Ωplus 10 kilohms equal how many Ω? ___11,000 Ohms_____21. 2,000 Ωminus 100 miliohms equal how many Ω? _1,999.9 Ohms___Scratch Pad;(Parts of this document take from: Electrical/Electronic Systems Specialist Developing Basic Diagnosis and Repair Skills Unit 3 Student Workbook http://www.okcareertech.org/cimc/downloads/outside-view/auto-electrical-student.pdf
