PREREQUISITES None. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK New Perspectives on Microsoft Office Access 2013, Comprehensive, Adamski, Finnegan & Scollard, Course Technology, Cengage Learning, 2014. ISBN13: 978-1-285-09920-0. You can acquire either the paperback or an eBook. I consider this textbook to be a superb resource for learning database concepts and developing one’s proficiency in Access. Investing the time to carefully read and work through the assigned tutorials and webcasts will enable you to master the material and succeed in the course. Textbook-based tutorials form the core of your learning activities and begin right away so acquire your copy ASAP! Purchase it from the publisher (www.cengagebrain.com/shop/ISBN/9781285099200), the college bookstore (480.423.6554, Room SC-104), or an online retailer.Page 2 of 8 OTHER MATERIALS You'll need a USB flash drive to store the data files required for the tutorials and exercises. Be sure to make backup copies of your data files! I have placed copies of my class notes and several other documents on my web site. You may print these materials and use them to guide your pre-class study time. In addition, use them during class to reduce the amount of time devoted to taking notes and increase your listening time. I have recorded a series of webcasts -- streaming videos that cover most of the topics and practice activities we do during our class sessions. If you miss a class session, I suggest you view and work through the corresponding portions of the tutorial webcast so you are caught up and ready to participate in the ensuing class session. INSTRUCTIONAL GAME PLAN Our general instructional game plan for each chapter will feature the following components: - Initial Learning -- first, you'll read and work through a chapter tutorial as an out-of-class assignment. Longer chapters may be broken into multiple assignments. - Self Assessment -- each section of each chapter ends with a Quick-Check, a set of questions to test your understanding of the concepts just covered. The answers will be available at wwwi.scottsdalecc.edu/trollen/CIS117/QuickChecks and are password protected. The password will be revealed in class. - Reinforcement -- once you've worked through a given assignment, we’ll use class sessions to review important points and cover additional related topics not presented in the chapter. You’ll gain additional hands-on practice to improve your proficiency. - Application –once we’ve completed material from a given chapter, you'll complete an end-of-chapter case that has you apply what you've learned. WORKLOAD Although students enroll for CIS117DM as a three-credit course, it actually includes two additional (independent, unscheduled) lab periods, so, overall it is a five-period course. There is substantial work associated with the lab assignments over-and-above those typically associated with a three-credit course. You should plan to spend 10-15 hours each week working on this course. You may work on your own Access-equipped PC, use one of SCC's computer labs, or use the web-based mySCC virtual environment (myscc.scottsdalecc.edu). The course will proceed in a rather linear fashion, with the material from one chapter serving as the foundation for the next. It will be crucial for each student to commit the time necessary to work on required assignments. Students who fall behind will quickly find themselves in an untenable position and will be unable to complete the course successfully. Although the preceding paragraphs may sound daunting, I am confident students can thrive provided they are aware of the course workload and have conscientiously pared their other commitments to ensure they can allocate 10-15 hours per week to the course. It will be helpful to work ahead whenever possible.Page 3 of 8 GRADES Your activities this semester will include (subject to change): assignments 320 midterm exam 100 final exam 150 Total 570 - Exams will cover the material indicated in the attached topic outline. You may make-up a missed exam provided you initiate arrangements within one week of the missed exam. Exams will include multiple-choice and written short answer questions. - You may prepare two pages of notes for use during the midterm exam (whether two sheets single-sided, or one sheet back-to-back). Violation of these limitations will result in a major deduction from your exam score. They may contain whatever content you want, typically things you don’t want to memorize (examples: IIF function syntax, list of steps to accomplish a task, etc.) or a summary of key terms and concepts. As you finish each tutorial, review the topics it covered and decide what to include in your exam notes. I suggest you create your notes with a word processor so you can modify them for use during the final exam. You will turn in your notes when you turn in your exam. - The final exam will be comprehensive but will emphasize material since the midterm. The final exam will be administered on campus and you’ll have a choice of several alternate dates/times. You may prepare four pages of notes for use during the final exam (whether four sheets single-sided, or two sheets back-to-back). Violation of these limitations will result in a major deduction from your exam score. You will turn in your notes when you turn in your exam. - Assignments are due by the beginning of the period on the due date. You will submit files for grading by sending them as an email attachment to [email protected]. Be sure to retain a copy of each homework submission email you send in case I don’t receive your original message (e.g.: spam filtered, message bounces, full inbox, etc.). - Assignments may be turned in late, with a 10% per day late
