Syllabus EDMS 769M Special Topics in Applied Statistics in Education Finite Mixture Models in Statistics Measurement Fall 2011 Location EDU 0114 Monday 4 15 7 00pm Phone 301 405 3630 Instructor Jeffrey Harring Email harring umd edu Office 1230E Benjamin Building Office Hours Monday 2 00 3 00pm Course Home Page http www education umd edu EDMS fac Harring EDMS769M html Course Description This advanced quantitative seminar focuses on model based clustering methods using finite mixture modeling as seen through the lens of several latent variable models including regression models structural equation modeling item response theory and diagnostic classification models This will be a team taught course which will be broken up into an introduction and three shorter mini courses each of which will address the use integration and application of finite mixture models in a particular context central to the research interest of the faculty The course outline with dates and topics is listed below Knowledge of regression structural equation modeling growth modeling and IRT is beneficial since the course builds upon these advanced topics although some introductory material will be covered Course Delivery I will be using my own course website to deliver materials for the course including class notes data sets ancillary materials extra readings etc You can access the course website at http www education umd edu EDMS fac Harring EDMS796M html You will find navigation buttons to access course materials You will be asked to provide your Username Directory ID and a Password If you have difficulty logging in there please contact me as soon as possible Prior to coming to class each week students are to print out and bring with them the lecture notes for that week s class Please follow the syllabus for topics and dates Materials should be posted by the morning on the day of class If they are not please don t fret I will make copies of the notes and bring them to class for you Dr Macready Dr
