INTRODUCTIONThis guide is intended to help authors who are prepar-ing ReVTexcompuscripts for publication in Reviews ofModern Physics. The same stylistic guidelines apply, ofcourse, in the preparation of typed copy for the journal. The editorial staff at RMP and the production staff atthe American Institute of Physics appreciate your effortto follow our style in preparing your article. We all standto gain from it—you in speedier publication and greateraccuracy, and we in ease of production.A style macro package is available at the RMP web-site,http://www.phys.washington.edu/;rmp.You will also find posted on this website a samplepaper prepared in ReVTex.ReVTexis the LaTexmacro used to produce thestandard layout and style of all American Physical Soci-ety journals, including the Physical Review journals andReviews of Modern Physics. It enables an author to sub-mit a file from which proof can be generated directly, without rekeyboarding.Another component of the style package, the HarvardBibliographic Style, is useful in generating RMP’s refer-ence format and in tagging reference citations within thetext for hypertext links.Below is a description of the features of RMP style, many of which are taken care of automatically by thestyle files. In addition, you will find some remarks on therationale behind this style and advice on preparingtables, figures, and equations. Two appendices complete the Style Guide. The first isa short paper, ‘‘Writing a Better Scientific Article,’’ witha special subsection intended for authors whose first lan-guage is not English. [To be posted on the RMP websitein mid 1998.] The second is a list of journal titles withtheir standard abbreviations for use in references. When your article is ready, send the compuscript elec-tronically to [email protected]. PostScript figures mayalso be sent electronically as separate files. Do not em-bed the figures in the text.Reviews of Modern Physics also has an ftp site towhich you can transfer your file. Contact the editorialoffice for the address and procedure.Alternatively, you can send hard copies of your textand/or figures to the RMP editorial office, University ofWashington, Department of Physics, Physics/AstronomyBuilding B42, Box 351560, Seattle, WA 98195-1560.Group the figures and tables at the end of the manu-script.We look forward to receiving your article.II. PRELIMINARY MATTERThe appropriate ReVTexmacro is given on the right.A. HeaderBegin your text file with this header:\documentstyle[preprint,aps]{revtex}B. Title \title$%Begin the first word with a capital letter; thereaftercapitalize only proper or trade names and chemical sym-bols. Words may be used in place of greek symbols intitles. The use of nonstandard abbreviations and acro-nyms is not allowed.C. Author(s) \author$%If there are multiple authors, they should be rangedone above the other. Capitalize the first letter of
