Prevention of HR headaches is smarter than “cleanup” after a mess.3. Sound performance management is the key to effective HRM.4. Things go wrong if you ignore people!5. High performance is achievable, but 7 HRM practices are essential.6. Employment law is complex – “When it doubt, check it out” with counsel.7. Recruiting good people requires “crystal ball” employment planning.8. Hiring is a “landmine” – selection tools need to be valid, reliable & effective.9. There is no substitute for a thorough background investigation (check).10. If a job candidate is too good to be true, he/she probably is!11. Training is not a cure for all performance ills – “gap analysis” is needed.12. Measure training results to insure “bang for your buck”!13. Form follows function! Both in training and performance review methods.14. Pay can motivate, provided the 3 conditions of expectancy theory are met.15. Competitive equity requires a hard look at pay level, mix, risk & needs.16. Employee benefits are complex and costly – don’t assume simplicity!17. Unions may be a blessing or a curse – be sensitive to the needs of employees.18. There is no substitute for healthy employee relations – it affects everything!19.
