MATH 1030-008:Introduction to Quantitative Reasoning12:55PM-1:45PM MWF in JTB 140Fall 2008Course Information:Instructor: Ben TrahanWebsite: http://www.math.utah.edu/~trahan/Teaching/1030/E-mail: [email protected]: JWB 332Office Phone: 581-7904Office Hours:Textbook: Using and Understanding Mathematics: A Quantitative Reasoning Approach,by Jeffrey O. Bennett and William L. Briggs (third edition). The version in the campusbookstore only includes the chapters we will be using (1-4 and 8-10) and thus may becheaper.Prerequisites: C or better in Math 1010 (Intermediate Algebra), or at least 23 on yourACT (math); this means that you should be able to manipulate variable expressions,work with simple linear equations and graphs, work with fractions and exponents, andknow the basic properties of geometric shapes. (NOTE: Math 1030 will not fulfill aMath 1050 or Math 1090 prerequisite.)Course: Math 1030 is an application-based course centered around the use of mathematicsto model changes in the real world, and the effective communication of these mathe-matical ideas. The course is based around chapters 1-4, chapters 8-9, and chapter 10section A of the book. You should read all of these sections as we cover them.Calculators: You will need a scientific calculator for this class. Bare minimum, it musthave an exponentiation (ex) and power (yx) key. You must bring your calculator to allquizzes and exams!Homework & Quizzes: Homework problems will be assigned approximately once a week.No late homework assignments will be accepted, and they must be turned in at thebeginning of the class on which they are due. Your lowest two homework grades willbe dropped. There will also be a quiz every two weeks. I will tell you the dates ofthese quizzes well in advance, and you must tell me in advance if you will be missingone. Each quiz will last 15-20 minutes, and class will continue afterwards. The lowestquiz grade will be dropped.Project: You will have one group project to turn in. You will receive a list of topics inearly October, and will work in groups of 3 students on a topic you have chosen. I willexplain the details when the topics are handed out, and you will have seven weeks tocomplete the project. Late projects will not be awarded full credit.1Exams: You will have two mid-term exams, each taking up a full period of class. Timepermitting, the preceding lecture will be dedicated to review. You MUST bring yourID to both exams. Absence from the exam will be excused ONLY if you can provideverifiable evidence of a serious illness or family crisis, and except in extreme circum-stances, you must inform me in advance. You must also get in touch with me promptlyabout making up the exam.Final Exam: The final exam will be Wednesday, December 17thin JTB 140 (which is thenormal room). It will, of course, be cumulative, and you should bring your ID.Grading: Your grade will be based on:Homework & Quizzes: 20%Project: 20%Exams (2): 30%Final Exam: 30%The final grades will be based on the normal 90%-A, 80%-B etc. scale.ADA Statement: The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that reasonable accom-modations be provided for students with physical, cognitive, systemic learning, andpsychiatric disabilities. Please contact me at the beginning of the semester to discussany such accommodations that you may require for this course.Withdrawal: The last day to DROP this class is Wednesday, September 3rd. The last dayto WITHDRAW from this class is Friday, October 24th. If you are unsure if you canpass the class with a satisfactory grade, please come talk to me so that we can discussoptions.Tutoring: The Rushing Math Center offers free drop-in tutoring, a computer lab, and studyareas for undergraduates. The Rushing Student Center is in the basement between LCBand JWB, the two math buildings on President’s Circle. The hours for the tutoringcenter are:Monday–Thursday: 8:00AM–8:00PMFriday: 8:00AM–4:00PMIt is open through finals, except for university holidays.
