XXXXXXXC. BustamantaEGL 102 00513 September 2008HeroMany people believe that heroes are those who hold the highest status in society. People consider heroes as movies stars, great athletes, and leaders of armies. However, in my opinion, ordinary people can be heroes also, such as my friend Esho. He improves himself by working hard to achieve his potential. Esho was 27 years old when he came to the USA. Esho decided to study civil engineering and become a structural engineer when he was 17years old, but he was never able to get his degree before arriving tothe USA. He entered the college of engineering at the University ofBaghdad when he was 18 years old. But he had to quit at his third year where he was only one year away from his bachelors. He had to leave Iraq because of the dramatic and tragic circumstances there. He had to stay for five years in Austria as an unrecognized refugee where he had to learn German for two years to be qualifiedto start at the Technical University of Vienna. In Vienna, he studiedthree years of civil engineering again and he got his admission to the USA. He had to leave Austria because he had no residency and work permission there. When he arrived to the USA, many people who knew him advised him not to study and waste time because he was already old enough for that and also that he is a foreigner andit would be impossible for him to find a job. In the best cases, they advised him to study a different field of engineering such as computer engineering, because civil engineering has no market. Esho ignored all these people and worked hard to get what he wanted. At the end he reached his goal. As a result, in my opinion, Esho is the greatest hero I have ever met because of what a great job he has done, therefore it was very important for me to have an interview with my friend Esho and ask him some questions. First question was about why he choice to become a civil engineer. Esho was so excited to answer this question. He told simply that when was eight years old; he liked a topic in his elementary school at his Arabic reading class. The topic was abouta young engineer who tries to built a castle toy and bring all pieces together and put them in the right way. From this topic, Esho understood that a civil engineer has a great duty to build his country. He got the most of the work involving in desiring and building the structures. Such as Hospitals, schools, airports, houses, high building, streets and much more. This reading of this story has made a huge impact to change Esho and decide to become as a civil engineering. This question remands me about myfather when he was 18 years old. He refused to work with or help my grandfather after he graduated from high school. He decided to continue to go to college to become a teacher. My grandfather was not educated and did not understood what can college do. The reason my father refuses to become a farmer because he read an article in his fifth grade. This article was about how farmer tread badly from the owner of farms. Therefore, my father did not like atall to work as former nor help my grandfather in his farm. In my second question was about what motivated you to continue your school even though you are arrival to the USA at theage of 26 years old. This what Esho answered me “ it was usually motivating m grow up inside me when I disappointed my family and specifically my father when I did not get a high GPA to be accepted in the college of engineering in Baghdad. So, when I had the opportunity to do that in the USA and make my family and again specifically my father proud of me, I decided to study even though it was a kind of late for a Middle Eastern person mentality. The second thing that motivated me was that I thought that I already have some back round in the civil engineering field from my previous studies in Iraq and Austria”. This question reminds me about Americans who always say that study at any ages never late. I tried to find the meaning of these words until I met the professor of sociology at Truman College in Chicago and I ask himwhy Americans should say these words even they know is too late for a person at age 90 years old. He answered me that the door of education is open for everyone at any age. We should not stop any one who is seeking to complete his or her major of study at any reasons. This is a part of human rights. According to Americanconstitution, each American has right to continue his or her education at any time of his or her age. Deciding late to go back to school help many people to get better job and better life. So why we have to stop someone wanted to build his or her future. My next question to Esho was about if someone push him or motivated him to study in the USA to complete his major. As I found out from his answer that not too many people. His parents were always supporting him and always made him feel proud of what he was ding and did not waste his time. On the other hand, most of his relatives recommended him to continue working in the hair salon because he was licensed from State of Illinois to work ashaircut. They told that there is no way to make more money from engineering if he would have his owned haircut salon and he is already a very good hair dresser and he got so many clients. In the best cases, the other friends or some of his relatives who were more educated, advised him to study computer engineering because they believe that the entire world is getting so computerized. His thought for the first group who advise him wasthat money is not everything. He would be much happier if his kidswould say that his father is an engineer than saying that his father is a hair stylist. For the second groups about study computer engineer batter than civil engineer because the entire world is getting computerized, he regard less how computerized this world would be, there always would be need for a civil engineers to buildbuilding for those computer engineers to work at and they would always need storages to put those computers in. as a result I agree for what my friend Esho answer for my question. He is absolutely right about money is not everything. Today, I can find many rich people who got everything and can buy any thing but they are not happy. They may have problems with their health conditions or have problems with their families. The butey of life is not to have lot money and I can do anything. The butey of life is to be honest, love and helper for …
