A $10 fee applies after February 4th. 1. Lectures begin January 19th and end on May 9th. Lectures are held in 1 Pimentel and are simulcast in 145 Dwinelle from 8-9 AM. Webcast of lectures will also be available (http://webcast.berkeley.edu/courses/). Lab handouts (and some lecture handouts) are available for purchase at Replica Copy, 2140 Oxford (near Ben & Jerry's). No note taking service is authorized. NOTE: If attendance at lecture drops below 80% webcasts of lectures will be terminated. Use the webcast as a study tool and not as an excuse to miss lecture. 2. ADDING: Labs and discussions begin the second week. To add Bio 1A, fill out an “ADD” form available on our website and submit it electronically by 4:00 PM Friday (1/21). Paper copies of the ADD form are available outside 2088 VLSB. Section assignments will be posted by 10 AM on Saturday (1/22) in the glass display case outside 2084 VSLB. Check! They may also be listed on our website. Your chance of adding the class will be higher if you select several “low demand” times as indicated on the form – night labs and Friday afternoon labs. Please check the display case outside 2084 VLSB. Students added will not be allowed to switch sections once given a section. 3. CHANGING SECTIONS: Labs and discussions begin the second week. It will be difficult to change sections. If you have an exam that directly interferes with your Tuesday or Wednesday night lab, you can request a one time switch into another lab the week of your exam. Do not request a permanent section change. No lab switches May 2nd – 6th due to the second lab exam. To change sections, fill out a “CHANGE” form available on our website and submit it electronically by 4:00 PM Friday (1/21). Paper copies of the CHANGE form are available outside 2088 VLSB. Very few changes will be made. Section assignments will be posted by 10 AM on Saturday (1/22) in the glass display case outside 2084 VSLB. They may also be listed on our website.Page 2 of 6 4. ENROLLMENT CONFIRMATION. ALL STUDENTS ENROLLED IN BIO 1A MUST CONFIRM THEIR ENROLLMENT BY FRIDAY 4 PM. See our website http://mcb.berkeley.edu/courses/bio1a/ under Spring 2005 announcements. Failure to do so will result in you being dropped from the class. 5. DISCUSSION begins Monday, January 24th. You must show up to your assigned section or you will be dropped. 6. LABORATORY begins Tuesday January 25th and will cover Safety and Equipment Use. See pages 1-30 of your Laboratory Manual which you must read before your lab (see below). If you can not attend, contact Mike Meighan beforehand. 7. Lecture examinations are scheduled for February 23rd and April 6th at 8 AM. There are no make-up exams. Room(s) to be arranged. If you miss an exam due to illness, you must present a written, verifiable medical excuse to Mike Meighan, and your grade for that exam will be pro-rated. A handout will be given in lecture concerning each exam. 8. In the case of disruption of an exam (fire alarm, bomb threat, etc.) alternative arrangements have been made. These may include moving the exam to another location, and/or extending the time, and/or arranging an alternative exam date or format (possibly essay). 9. Lab exams are scheduled as follows: First lab exam, Wednesday night, March 30th. Room(s) to be arranged. Your second Lab Exam will be held on your assigned lab day, within your three hour period (May 3rd – May 6th). There are no make-up lab exams, nor may you switch from your assigned section. Exam handouts will be given. 10. Final Examination: Friday May 13th at 8 - 11 AM. Room(s) to be arranged. The final exam will be comprehensive and will cover all lectures. You will receive a handout in lecture regarding specific details about the final (point distribution, weighting, etc.). 11. Attendance: You are required to attend your normally scheduled lab AND discussion. However, if an exam directly conflicts with your lab it will be possible to reschedule lab during the same week EXCEPT THE week of May 3rd to 6th. TO DO THIS you must see or e-mail Mike Meighan the week prior to your exam conflict (such as Organic Chemistry). You know well in advance when your exams are, therefore, schedule lab changes one week ahead of the conflicting exam. See page 1 for my phone # and e-mail. TEXTBOOKS AND LAB MANUAL Required textbook: Campbell, Biology, 6th edition, Benjamin-Cummings 2002. There should be plenty of used 6th editions at the bookstore. If you must spend about $100 for a new 6th edition then go ahead and buy a new 7th edition. Required Lab Manual: The required lab manual (2004/2005) is available at ASUC and Ned’s. This is a new edition and you cannot use previous editions. Required pre-labs and worksheets are available as a packet at Replica Copy located near Ben & Jerry’s on the west side of campus at 2140 Oxford. It is about 70 pages. (about $3.00). Recommended Lab Manual: A Guide to Biology Lab., 3rd ed. T. G. Rust. Southwest Education Enterprise. It is fairly inexpensive for a used copy (about $14). Exam Reader: An exam reader with exams from past semesters will be available at
