DEVELOPMENT OF TRAINING PROGRAMSPurpose of Exercise: To apply the concepts in Chapter 5 – Training & Developing Employees.Task: Design a training program and make a proposal to the class, describing the program design and methods used, advantages and disadvantages, its cost/benefit tothe organization, and how its impact will be measured and evaluated.Training Needs (Options):1. Team Building Exercise. Need to develop skills to strengthen in-class group effectiveness. Some suggested skills are: (1) process for sharing relevant info; (2) summarizing key points via consensus; (3) selecting and supporting presenters; (4) making assignments for the next class (e.g., Internet research); and (5) means to confront unprepared members of thegroup (feedback). 2. Skill Building Training Program. Need to develop skills in managers responsible for employment interviewing. Some suggested skills are: (1) asking inquiring questions; (2) active listening – paraphrasing and perception checking; (3) avoiding common biases; and (4) adhering to an interview protocol. 3. Presentation Skills Training Program. Need to develop skills in making more effective in-class presentations. Some suggested skills are: (1) clearly and concisely describing relevant concepts; (2) facilitating interaction with the class via questions or exercises; (3) creatively using more members of the group in the presentation; and (4) using visual aids as possible. 4. New Student Orientation Program. Need to develop relevant knowledge and skills in new students to facilitate their adjustment to college life. Some suggested skills are: (1) use of campus resources; (2) study habits; (3) balancing academic and social life; and (4) other “survival” skills.5. Other. A group can propose an alternative program.What happens in the next class? Each group will have 10 minutes to present their “training proposal” to the class, including any examples of how the actual program will be conducted (simulation).
