It's wonderful to see as many of you here today.Hopefully more people will come in during the course of thehearings, because indeed what is happening here in our citytoday is very very important not only to the softwareindustry, but certainly to the nation and to the country as awhole.Commissioner LEHMAN, distinguished officials from thePatent and Trademark Office, ladies and gentlemen, I amBlanc Alvarado, Vice-Mayor, City of San Jose and it is mypleasure to welcome you to our city known as the capitol ofSilicon Valley for hearings on patents for software-relatedinventions.As you all know, for the past decade the computer softwareindustry has evolved into one of the nation's fastest-growingindustries, and today U.S. software firms lead the world ininnovation and market share. Silicon Valley firms developone-fourth of the world's software, and to maintainleadership in this vital industry, a commitment to innovationon the part of each and every one of us is essential. It is quite a privilege for San Jose to host the first landmarkpublic hearing on patent protection held outside ofWashington, D.C. This is the first in a series of publichearings which will result with your input and good advice ina revamping and updating of a system that at best I would sayis somewhat out of date. We commend the Patent andTrademark Office for recognizing Silicon Valley's critical rolein the world software industry, and I would also like torecognize the efforts of our own Office of EconomicDevelopment in bringing these hearings to San Jose. The dialogue that will take place today and tomorrow andthroughout the public hearings in other parts of the countryis as you know extremely important to the softwareindustry, to our regional economy, and certainly to thenation's economy. We wish each and every one of you avery very successful public hearing, and we encourage you tospeak candidly, to give us your best advice so that those thatare here from the Patent Office will be able to take yourrecommendations, your input in the most serious stepfurther up ahead, to look at how the system for patentinginventions can be improved. We wish you success, encourage you to stay for the two days, and also encourageyou to invite other people who are not here presently toattend as well. Thank you very much for being here.COMMISSIONER LEHMAN: Thank you very much.--o0o--COMMISSIONER BRUCE LEHMANCOMMISSIONER OF PATENTS AND TRADEMARKSCOMMISSIONER LEHMAN: On behalf of President Clintonand Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown and all of us at theDepartment of Commerce and the Patent and TrademarkOffice, I'd like to thank the Vice-Mayor and the City of SanJose
