The purpose of this course is to relate college-level mathematics to real-life problems. We will emphasize problem-solving techniques, specifically by means of discussing concepts including proportional reasoning, geometry, set theory, probability, statistics, and finance. This course is open to students whose major does not require MAT 119, MAT 170, or MAT 210 and have completed either MAT 106 or scored at least a 60 on the Unified Placement test. This course also carries General Studies “MA” credit. Therefore, I request that your cell phone is turned off and put away while you are in this class, as its usage during class is disruptive and distracting to the learning environment, both individually and as a group.Boshes MAT142 F09 2Required Text: Mathematics All Around, Fourth Edition (Custom Package); by Pirnot; Pearson Custom Publishing; ISBN 0558326153. Calculator: A scientific calculator is required for this course. A few of the recommended models include the TI-30, TI-34, and TI-36. A graphing calculator (such as the TI-83) is not required, but if you own one, you may use it. Cellular phone calculators are not permitted in class or during an exam. Also, the sharing of calculators is not permitted during exams. If you need to purchase a calculator for this class and you also plan to take STP 226, I recommend that you purchase a TI-84, since that is required for STP 226. Blackboard: All homework assignments, class handouts, review sheets etc., will be posted on the Blackboard site for this class. You can access blackboard by going to My ASU and clicking on this class. Check the Blackboard site regularly for updates and announcements. Student Success Center: The Student Success Center, located on the first floor of University Center, will be open Monday-Thursday from 8am-6pm and on Friday from 8am-3pm. Be sure to go for help before it is too late and several days before an exam. Additional information on the Student Success Center can be found on their webpage at: http://studentsuccess.asu.edu/downtown. Exams: You will take 3 exams during the semester and one final exam according to the tentative dates listed below. Any changes will be announced at least one week in advance. Each exam will involve a mix of mechanical skills and conceptual reasoning. The best possible preparation for them is regular attendance and completion of assigned homework. No exam scores will be dropped. Exam Date Topics on Exam Exam #1 Monday, September 21, 2009 1.1, 7.5, 10.5, 2.1,2.2,2.3,2.5 Exam #2 Monday, October 19, 2009 2.4, 13.1, 13.2, 14.1-14.4 Exam #3 Monday, November 9, 2009 15.1-15.5 Final Exam See below. 9.1-9.6 Final Exam: The final exam will be given in our regular classroom as scheduled on the final exam scheduled located at: http://www.asu.edu/registrar/registration/finals.html. According to ASU policy, final exams can be rescheduled only under the following circumstances: (1) religious conflict, (2) the student has more than 3 exams scheduled on the same day, or (3) two finals are scheduled to occur at the same time. No final exams will be rescheduled for personal reasons or non-refundable airline tickets. You are encouraged to work together, but each individual student is required to submit his or her own work. Most of your homework will be submitted online at http://www.coursecompass.com using MyMathLab, but some written homework assignments will be collected and graded to supplement MyMathLab. All written assignments must be turned in neat, organized, and stapled if there are multiple pages. If not, your written homework will not be graded. No late assignments will be collected if you miss class for any reason, however, the approximate equivalent of one homework assignment will be dropped at the end of the semester. Written homework assignments are considered late if they are turned in after the instructor has collected them at the beginning of class. For
