It has practice tests, and in the section “destinations” are many different sites you can visit to help you learn the material. ISBN 0-395-30787-2 Course Description: This course seeks to prepare mental health and school counselors to be informed consumers of research and evaluation. It covers basic statistics, research designs, and program evaluation within the counseling and educational fields. It provides experience in developing accountability measures and in reading research and evaluating reports applicable to multicultural populations.2 Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand how to critically analyze, interpret, and apply results of research relevant to the practice of counseling and know models of program evaluation and basic strategies for evaluating counseling outcomes in distinct counseling settings. 2. Understand basic types of math computation and research methods, including quantitative, qualitative, single case designs, action research, program evaluation and outcome based research. 3. Knows current methods of using data to inform evidence based practice, decision making and accountability, and develops measurable outcomes for counseling programs, activities, interventions and experiences. 4. Understands the importance of research and demonstrates an ability to analyze and use data to increase effectiveness of counseling programs. 5. Understands ethical and culturally relevant strategies for interpreting and reporting the results of research and/or program evaluation studies. 6. Knows the principles, models, and applications of needs assessment, program evaluation, and the use of data findings to effect program modifications. 7. Demonstrate knowledge of math computations and statistical concepts, including scales of measurement, measures of central tendency, indices of variability, shapes and types of distributions, and correlations 8. Examine statistical methods used in conducting research and program evaluation. 9. Understand reliability (i.e., theory of measurement error, models of reliability, and the use of reliability information) and validity (i.e., evidence of validity, types of validity, and the relationship between reliability and validity). Class Calendar Please, read texts prior to first class. All material tested from texts will be thoroughly covered in class. Some of the readings may be quite difficult to understand prior to class presentation. You will need to propose a quantitative study w/ a true experimental design. The paper describing the proposed study should be written in APA style and contain 1) an introduction 2) a methods section, 3) intervention (treatment),4) an informed consent form, and 5) references The report should be at least 10 pages long, double-spaced, APA style. There is no maximum amount of pages. Reference numbers are minimums (which are equivalent to average work). Please do not use websites. Only academic journals and books. For the quantitative proposal, this will need to be an EXPERIMENT. This means there should be at least one independent variable that you are manipulating and at least one dependent variable. Please, do NOT do any survey or correlational studies. The paper should be pertinent to something in the counseling field. If you have questions about the design, please bring it up in class or email or call/email me before the paper is turned in. An outline will be provided. Proposal Presentation: You will have 30 minutes to present your research proposal. You are encouraged to develop a power point presentation and be very well prepared. The presentation is 15% of your grade. You must understand your study sufficiently to explain it to an educated audience.4 Please use the NSU website for a basis of how to do your informed consent form. This can be found at: http://www.nova.edu/cwis/ogc/irb/consentform.html. The informed consent should be an appendix of your paper.
