Additional topics may includedesktop information management and the Internet.Objectives: To become familiar with the components and operation of a computer system and how it functions.To become familiar with the Windows environment.To gain a working understanding of the application software mentioned above.To acquire the capability of designing and developing software solutions to business problems.To become familiar with Word Processing software: Create, edit, and format, save, retrieve, and print a document.To become familiar with Spreadsheet software: Create a worksheet, enter text and numbers, edit text, format, save, retrieve and print worksheet. Also use charting techniques.To become familiar with Database software. Create, modify, query, and produce reports. The To become familiar with Presentation software: Create, modify, a slide-show presentation with appropriate handouts, etc.Method ofInstruction: Instructor will use lecture and visual aids as the method of presentation. Students will be given hands-on exercises to complete during the class as well as for homework. Students are encouraged to ask questions.Textbook andSupplies: Microsoft Office XP: Introductory Concepts and Techniques, XP Windows Edition, Course Technology, Shelly, Cashman, Vermaat. 2003.Four 3 ½” HD Floppy DisksA three-ring notebook.Attendance: You are expected to attend a all classes, complete all assignments, and take all tests and/or exams. Regular class attendance is required. If you are unable to attend class, it is necessary that you be excused from class and that you ascertain what was covered in your absence and make up missed work. Students who fail to attend 30% of the scheduled class meetings may no longer be carried on the instructor’s roll. Remember that it is the student’s responsibility to initiate the proper paperwork to withdraw from the class. Pay close attention to deadlines.Assignments: Class absence does not relieve any student from meeting an assignment deadline. It is your responsibility to come to class prepared with all assignments, regardless of whether or not you were in class when the assignment was made.Grading: Each requirement is assigned the following number of points:PercentThree Tests 40%Assignments/Notebook 20%Presentation/Participation 10%Final Exam 30% You will submit all In the Lab assignments for grading. All Projects and Applying Your Knowledge exercises will be kept in a notebook. Periodically, the notebooks will be evaluated. You may add your In the Lab assignments to your notebook once they are returned. All students are asked to give an oral presentation on a topic that will be determined later in the course. The final exam will be comprehensive.In the Lab assignments must be turned in by the next scheduled class, after which they were assigned or 5 points will be deducted for each class period past this date.Calculation ofFinal Grade: Final grades will be determined based on this grading scale:GradeA = 90 – 1002B = 80 - 89C = 70 - 79D = 60 - 69F = 0 - 59Make-up Exams: Missed tests and/or exams cannot be made up unless the absence is documented with a complete explanation of any mitigating circumstance. Permission to make up the test/exam may then be granted at the discretion of the instructor. In the event that you must miss a test or exam because of exigent circumstances, you must notify the instructor before the exam or as soon thereafter as possible. Failure to do so may result in a denial of permission to take the missed test/examPolicies: Students are not to store any files on the hard drive or copy software from the hard drive. Students may not change computer settings or make any other changes to the hard drive. The result may be a grade penalty or removal from class.There is no smoking, eating, drinking allowed in the classroom/lab.ADDITIONAL POLICIESAttendance Policy:Regular attendance is expected and an attendance record will be maintained for each class. Students who fail to attend class during the first 25 percent of the course will be administratively withdrawn from the course by the instructor for failure to attend and make satisfactory progress in the course.College Schedule:Important dates can be found in the schedule of classes or by accessing the college web site at http://www.nvcc.edu/calendars/.
