It offers a balanced and eclectic selection of topics, a firm foundation ofclassic and up-to-date research, and an examination of timely issues such as abuse, geneticcounseling, and changing family lifestyles. Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment with ELE 2000 is recommended. Course Rationale: This course will orient students to learning principles/theories and childdevelopment principles/theories and will serve as a foundation for higher-level courses. Course Goal: This course is intended to increase knowledge of ways children grow, develop,and learn from the time they are conceived until they have matured beyond early adolescence.The physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of children and adolescence will beexplored. Appropriate activities that promote the growth of children and adolescents and societalchanges that influence their development will also be investigated. Objectives for all ELE Classes:A. Develop a desire for lifelong learning in students and personally display one's own desire for lifelong learning including self-evaluation.B. Demonstrate good communication.C. Demonstrate/exhibit sensitivity to student's feelings.D. Demonstrate knowledge of facts, and an understanding of fundamental principles, ideas, and relationships among various domains.E. Demonstrate knowledge of past and present developments issues, research, and socialinfluences in field education.Objectives Specific to this Course:A. Emphasize higher order, critical thinking.B. Strive to develop student's intellectual, social, ethical, and moral skills and behavior.C. Provide for the uniqueness of individuals, recognizing of characteristic of culturally pluralistic and "at risk" populations, and foster appreciation of those differences.D. Design instruction to develop and utilize the cognitive processes by which pupils learn.Learning Model: Information-Processing Model.Text: Santrock, J.W. (2005). Children. 8th Edition. McGraw -Hill Company.Course Requirements & Evaluation:A. Review two research articles 60B. Current Event (1 current news item about child development) 10C. Personal Child Study Paper 50D. Quizzes (For most chapters – 10 points) 150F. E-mail Instructor 30G. Six TESTS including a MIDTERM and a FINAL 600Total 900Extra Credit Opportunities: Extra credit opportunities will be provided during the course. Areaction paper (one page, typed, double spaced, 12 point font) may be written for some of thevideos we watch in class for a maximum of 5 points each. Also, each student may do a maximumof one extra current event for a maximum of 5 points. Each student may earn up to a total of 50points extra credit.Grading Scale: 90-100%- A; 80-89%- B; 70-79%-C; 60-69%-D; Below 60%- FAt any point in this course, a student can determine the letter grade at which he/she is achievingby dividing the number of points earned on tasks required. Grades will be available on WebCT.The above percentage levels can be matched with the designated letter grade equivalents. Duedates will be set for all work, two points shall be deducted for each calendar day that a paper orproject is late. A 10% deduction will be assessed on all tests not taken on the assigned test day.Attendance: Attendance is expected. No chapter quizzes and extra credit assignments can bemade up, whether the absence is excused or otherwise. Quizzes: A quiz will be given after most chapters to help prepare for tests. You are required totake each quiz before we take a test over that section. Each quiz is worth 10 points. Quizzes willbe available online for a specified number of days only. If missed, they cannot be made up.Final Exam: Your final exam will be during the designated final exam time. You will be giventwo hours to take the final exam. Videos: There will be a selection of videos to help students understand child and adolescent development. If a student misses a video, it is his/her responsibility to watch the video with another class or get the notes from a classmate.Reading Assignments: This is a reading intensive course. You will be required to read all of thechapters in your book. Class discussions will require you to have read the chapters ahead of timeand to be able to apply what you have learned. Due Dates: All assignments are due by E-mail in WebCT by 1:00 p.m. on the date due. The due dates are available on the Calendar in the WebCT course.Current Event and article reviews will be due on the day you sign up for them. (Starting from thethird week).
