COURSE OUTLINE DANC-238 Foundations in Intermediate Dance Technique IV 1 Semester Hour HOWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE Description This course is a continuation of DANC-235, DANC-236, and DANC-237 and is designed to provide students who are registered for DANC-268 and/or DANC-278 with continued supplemental practice and theory in areas that are fundamental to the learning goals in those classes. Subject matter includes somatic literacy, experiential anatomy and kinesiology, rhythmic analysis, Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals, support modalities for dance, conditioning and wellness. This course is both teacher-directed and student-centered. Emphasis is placed on those areas which best address the particular needs of the students in the class, but all material above is covered. Co-Requisite: DANC-268 or DANC-278 (2 hours weekly) Overall Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Develop a continued awareness of one’s own working body, including perception, proprioception and spatial relativity 2. Identify Bony Landmarks and embody their usefulness as guides to efficient movement at a deepening level 3. Discuss and embody LMA and BF at a deepening theoretical and practical level 4. Perform conditioning exercises for dance from various support modalities with accuracy and intent 5. Acquire best practices for continuing dance wellness, strength and flexibility 6. Translate topics covered into physical practice for application in ongoing Modern and Ballet Technique classes 7. Compare and contrast movements done in an anatomically correct versus an anatomically incorrect manner 8. Investigate continuing connections between the techniques of Modern Dance forms and also those of Modern Technique and Ballet Technique 9. Distinguish and replicate differing rhythmic patterns in movement and music at an intermediate level 10. Continue to Self-assess and self-correct dance movements and sequences for alignment, accuracy, and efficiency 11. Develop personal movement goals and path to achieve those goals 12. Reading and assignments drawn from texts Other Course Information This course is used to fulfill the requirements for Dance Performance majors and serves as an Arts & Sciences, Fine Arts and Humanities elective.
