These are some of the names that many of you will probably recognize in sports and events. Now, by show of hands again, who has heard of Kyle Miller, Matthew Anderson, or Dennis Chan? Most of you are probably thinking, “Who is that?” Am I right? Well, these guys represented the United States team in 2005 at the World Cyber Games at the Grand Finals in Singapore in different games as stated by Sports Illustrated. B. Thesis Statement: Today, I am going to inform you about the World Cyber Games or WCG for short. C. Fairhearing or Significance: Now I know some of you don’t play video games and that is fine. But what if I told you that this career/lifestyle can lead to easy money and a job that you will love. In Seoul, South Korea, some of the top gamers make at least six figures a year just playing video games. Also, for the ladies, this is a great place to meet single guys. According to a research done by Dr. Lily Chen, Dr. Hill Tu, and Dr. Edward Wang in the fields of Cyber Psychology & Behavior, out of the 500 people that were studied, 445 of them are single with 328 of them being college students. This also includes female gamers. So guys why not date a chick that plays games? Not the bad games with relationships, but console games. D. Overview: So today, I am first going to introduce you exactly what is the World Cyber Games. Second, the variety of games that are played. Third, how you can be a part of the competition. Forth and finally, the prizes and awards received after a competition. (Transition: So let’s get started.) II. Body A. Introduction to World Cyber Games 1. According to wcg.com (their official website), World Cyber Games is a global tournament in which sport is conducted within the medium of cyberspace. Their slogan: Beyond The Game. a. The event started in 2000 as just a national competition in South Korea. a. As the years progressed, other nations started to hear about the event and wanted to be involved. Now, just take a look at the picture. b. This year’s grand final will be held in Chengdu, China where the best of the best players from different countries will be displayed. (Transition: So now that you know the basic concept of the World Cyber Games, let’s move on to the games.) B. The Games 1. Out of all the games that could be played, the World Cyber Game committee selects only a few of them for competition. It is separated into three categories. Xbox 360, the PC, and mobile gaming (e.g. PSP). a. As you can see by the chart, these are the games that players are eligible to compete in. b. I’m only going to go over a couple of the games that are the highlight of the competition. i. Warcraft III and Starcraft are RTS (Real Time Strategy) which a human opponent goes against another or computer in actual time combat. In other words, your moves and commands you assign can easily be countered by the opposing force. ii. Counter-Strike, which is a FPS (First Person Shooter) and a team based game, puts a player in a first perspective view with tactical weapons to attack an opposing team. iii. And finally, Virtual Fighter 5 as you can already tell from the title is a fighting game. It is a 1 on 1 game where you are against your opponent, whether it is a computer or human player. Every year there is always a new game that is being changed to the play list. a. However, Starcraft is the only game in the entire World Cyber Game career that has not been replaced by any other game yet. This game still ranks among the most popular RTS of all time. (Transition: Alright, so now that I have shown you the games that could be play, let’s talk about the competition.) C. Players & Competition 1. The great thing about the World Cyber Game is that anyone can join in the competition. a. However, those that plan to enter need to meet two requirements that are set by the WCG committee, which can be found at wcg.com. i. First off, players need to be at least 18 years of age or older. Those who are a minor must have consent with a parent or legal guardian. ii. Second, those who are eligible after the first requirement must register before the qualification rounds begin for their game. b. In one example from Sports Illustrated, Carol Tang was only 15 years old when she was entered into the tournament. She had no professional experience and only played for fun. She enjoyed playing Counter Strike with her friends. Unfortunately for her, she was eliminated the first round at the event by a professional team. As you can see, anyone and everyone are welcomed.
