Goals: The main goals of this course are to (1) learn to use a computer algebrasystem (CAS) to solve mathematical problem, (2) learn how to write mathematicsusing LaTeX (which includes typesetting commands), and finally (3) be able to give ashort oral presentation- More on this last item later.2. Software: We will be using Maple for our mathematics work and LaTeX (pronounced“Lay-Tech”, different than rubber) for the word processing. See our class website aboutgetting a copy of LaTeX for your home computer (it’s free!).3. Grading: Your grade will be based on the written reports you turn in, and an assess-ment of your oral presentation.Your grade will be based on: Exercises, Lab reports, and the oral presentation. The firsttwo assignments together constitute the first lab (Lab 0), then we have the remaininglabs. Together, the labs will be 80% of the overall grade, and the oral presentation willbe 20%. Grading will be done on a standard scale:A = 90 − 100 B = 80 − 89 C = 70 − 79 D = 60 − 69 F = 59 or less4. Group Work: You will do your assignments collaboratively with a partner. Labpartners will be assigned randomly at the beginning of each lab, and you may notswitch partners until that lab is completed. It is your responsibility to make sure thatyour partner contributes fairly to the project.Submitting your work: Be sure your file has the name of both lab partners onit when turning it in, and each student will upload a copy of the lab (or assignmentsolutions) to their own CLEo mailbox.5. Plagarism: Your write ups should be completely your own- when you use otherexternal sources, be sure and cite them (there are old calc books on the bookshelfyou may use as needed)- You may use a footnote citation in abbreviated form1. In1Calculus, James Stewart, 2001, pg. XX1particular, you should NOT try to look up solutions to the exercises or lab write upson the internet.6. Late Work: Late work will be accepted, but a penalty will be assigned: 5% for thefirst day late, 10% for the second day late, 15% for the third day late, and so on. Sincemost of the submissions are electronic, these count weekends and holidays.7. Other items:If you have a learning disability that will require special arrangements for you, pleaselet me know as soon as possible.I will not take attendance, but you are expected to come to class and work with yourpartner. If you need to miss class or an appointment with your partner, please do them(and me!) the courtesy of an email.8.
