Homework 3 FRACTALS AND CHAOS Prof Bechtold Astronomy 201 Fall 2010 DUE Turn in before class Tuesday Sept 21 You may be familiar with the beautiful computer generated pictures that are made with fractals I ve put some examples on the class web site In this assignment you will generate some pictures using a fractal generation program First read the page on Fractals and Chaos on the class web site 1 Generate a fractal image 40 points Download xMandelbrot jar from the class web site and put it on your computer Then double click on the file you downloaded and you should get the following screen If you click and drag on any area of the Mandelbrot set then let go the program draws a box and zooms in on the part of the picture you specified You can change the color pallette by clicking on Control Apply Default Palette then pick a different color pallette To make your own color pallette click on Control Show Palette Editor If you zoom in a lot try changing the MaxIterations to a larger number Have fun and be creative For an example of what a previous student did for this assignment see Michael Ronstadt s Fractals When you are done click on File Save JPEG image and save your image on your disk Call your image your last name jpg So for example when I save my image I d call it bechtold jpg Email your image as an attachment to astronomy201 gmail com before class on Tuesday Sept 21 In the body of your email give your fractal a name and put your full name in the subject line If you do not have access to a computer please contact us to get an alternative assignment 2 EXTRA CREDIT 10 points Take a photograph of something in nature which is a fractal and email it as an attachment to astronomy201 gmail com Please send a jpg or gif file
