POSTER PRESENTATIONS – BIOL305 LABORATORYEach lab group will present a poster on one of the experiments you performed during the course of the semester (the same lab as the oral presentation). You should have all the data and your observations in your lab notebook, which will be useful in making your presentation. You will use your data to create tables, graphs and illustrations for your presentation. Just as in a written lab report, the poster should include a Title, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods Section (brief!), Results and a Discussion. Do not worry about a Conclusions or Acknowledgements Section. This poster presentation will be worth a total of 60 points (approximately 12 % of your total grade) and all members of the group will receive the same grade for the presentation. Before you begin your poster, walk around the department, particularly on the second, third and fourth floors. There are dozens of posters hanging in the hallways surrounding the research laboratories. Examine these posters to get a feel for how a poster should be organized. Look for both design and content. To Make Your Poster, You Should:- Use a PC with Windows XP- Use Power Point for the construction of your poster- Open Power Point and select Page Setup under the File menu.- Make the width of the poster 36 inches and the height 30 inches. - Leave a margin of approximately 2 inches on all sides. The printer cuts off 1.5 inches of margins.- Set the font to the following sizes: - Title: 100 point- Subheading: 48 point- Text: 24 point - Avoid using light letters on a dark background or using background color or wallpaper. Both use too much ink.- Use the same computer for the entire process or else you will encounter problems with formattingTo Get Your Poster Printed, You Must:- Have the entire, finalized version of the poster saved onto CD - Take your CD to Common Vision (in the Commons) or contact them online (www.umbc.edu/thecommons/commonvision). Submit your poster to have it printed. Estimated cost will be about $25/ poster. - Give your CD to Common Vision AT LEAST 4 DAYS IN ADVANCE of your poster presentation. Since there are many students getting posters printed at the end of the semester, the staff will need time to schedule the work. Alternatively, Kinkos can also print your poster. NOTE: Late posters WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED and WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF ZERO!The Grade on the Poster Presentation Will be Based on the Following Criteria:- Title: Should be complete, descriptive and appropriate for the lab chosen(not just Frog Lab or Sciatic Nerve Lab!)- Abstract: Should briefly summarize the entire lab, including trends in data - Introduction: Should identify all background concepts. Should describe (briefly/succinctly) the anatomy and physiology of the species where relevant to the lab. All important terms should be identified. Any instruments or techniques used in the lab (and their function) should be included. The overall purpose of the experiment(s) must be mentioned. TWO references from two different scientific journal articles (American journals) must be cited in this section of the poster (the sources MUST be relevant to the topic you are writing on!)- Materials & Methods: Should be a brief summary of the experimental set up and experiments conducted. Do NOT detail the dissection but rather summarize it!!!- Results: Should include a complete presentation of all the data in TWO different forms:o Text You must state your results in text, NOT just in captions below your graphs & tables! Refer the reader to your graphs/tables in the text. For example: as stimulus intensity increased, response amplitude increased (see Fig. 1)o Graphical /tabular form AND/OR TracesIf you include graphs in your presentation, all units must be included and axes labeled. Do not omit data! Graphs and tables should be easy to see &read. Condense data whenever possible (i.e. give averages if appropriate). All tables/graphs should have an appropriate title. If traces are included inyour presentation, make sure they are easy to see and interpret. Traces should also include a title or caption which explains what the trace is showing.- Discussion: ALL data should be analyzed and interpreted FULLY and CORRECTLY. Link the experiments you conducted to real world issues!- References: All citations should be in the proper format (as shown on the link on the course web site) both in text AND in the references section of the poster Do NOT cite references if they were not used in your poster!- The following count towards your final grade on the poster:o Spelling, grammar, typos- EVERY group member should spell-check and proofread your poster!o Organization & flow- Don’t assign different group members to write different parts of theposter. If you do, the poster will appear choppy and inconsistent.o Poster Appearance, artistry & creativity- Poster should be easy to read (not crammed full of unnecessary text). Use color and illustrations to make the poster more interesting.o Answers to questions- All group members should have a thorough understanding of the poster and should be able to answer questions!o Be sure to look for inconsistencies in font, color, spelling, ect…*** You MUST submit ALL text from the poster to TurnItIn.com. This includes the references
