7th edition CQ Press 2010 Official Course Description The historic background and current status of major civil rights issues in the United States Prerequisites None Course Objectives This class seeks to educate students about the guarantees of individual liberty and equality found in the U S Constitution particularly in the Bill of Rights and the Fourteenth Amendment Additionally students will achieve an understanding of the role of the courts particularly the U S Supreme Court in securing and protecting those rights and liberties Ultimately students will gain the skills and knowledge which will enable them to meaningfully appreciate and debate the continuing controversies between the interests of individuals and the sometimes conflicting interests of society POS 223 qualifies for both Cultural Diversity C and Behavioral Science SB credit at ASU Reading Assignments and Briefs The majority of the reading assignments are contained in the textbook Any other materials will be handed out in class and posted on Blackboard It is imperative that students complete the assigned readings prior to class in order to participate in the discussions Despite the relatively small page assignments the readings are very challenging so please plan accordingly Instructions for briefing cases are found in Appendix 8 Page 777 It is recommended that students brief all the cases at least informally in order to facilitate classroom instruction Grading The final course grade will be determined based on the following point system U S Supreme Court Report Video Review Two Papers 100 points each Exam 1 Units I and II Exam 2 Units III and IV Final exam Units V and VI Total Points 50 points 50 points 200 points 100 points 100 points 100 points 600 points The grading scale is as follows A 540 or higher B 480 539 C 420 479 D 360 419 F below 360 Extra Credit It will be possible for students to earn a total of 30 extra credit points through completion of assignments to be distributed throughout the semester Attendance and Participation Because a significant portion of the course will be presented by lecture and during class discussions regular attendance is crucial to success If you need to miss a class check WebCt for any changes or assignments Any student who misses 3 consecutive days without contacting me will be withdrawn from the course Strong classroom participation and attendance will also be recognized in computing final grades Classroom Policies Assignments may be turned in on or before their due dates Late work will be accepted up to 1 week beyond the due date with a 10 grade deduction Missed exams must be made up within a week Deadlines and penalties will be waived only for special circumstances Failure to appear for the Final Exam will result in a grade of zero on the exam Late arrivals are disruptive to other students Moreover announcements are frequently made at the beginning of a class period If you are late it is your responsibility to get the announcements All assignments exams and extra credit projects are to be the exclusive work product of the individual student Academic dishonesty plagiarism cheating etc will not be tolerated and will be resolved under the procedures established in the Glendale Community College Student Handbook Every student is expected to know and comply with all current published policies rules and regulation as printed in the college catalogue class schedule and or student handbook Taping is not permitted without my prior permission If you have a disability which may have some impact on your work in this class and for
