Peter Woll Course Description: This course is a survey of fundamental principles of political science, including the American system of government and the origins and development of the constitutions of the United States and Texas. This course satisfies the Legislative requirements for teacher certification.Govt. 2301.336 11/1S Melanie Johnson, Instructor Course Purpose: To acquaint students with the specifics of the development of the Texas and U.S. Constitutions and the party systems of the nation and state. The primary goal is to promote critical thinking in understanding of the operation of the US and Texas governments. Fundamentally, the course promotes general understanding of a body of knowledge any literate person should possess about the government of his own country. Course Requirements: To maximize a student’s potential to complete this course, he/she should attend all class meetings, complete all homework assignments and examinations in a timely manner, and complete all other projects or papers as assigned in the instructor’s specific instructions. Should you miss a class, it will be your responsibility to obtain missed materials or notes. Attendance Policy: Whenever absences become excessive and in the instructor's opinion, minimum course objectives cannot be met due to absences, the student will be withdrawn from the course. Each instructor will have additional information about attendance on his/her course information sheet. Students who have completed this course will be expected to: . Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of major perspectives in American government. . Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the development of the US Constitution & of the Texas Constitution. . Understand the nature of government as a fundamental subject in the study of humanity. . While slang, regional idioms, and informal kinds of self-expression are appropriate in some contexts, they are out of place in academic writing. Writing instructors and professors in courses across the campus expect all students to demonstrate proficiency in using the conventions of academic English in their written work, whether it is in-class exams or take-home essays. Tests and Grades: The grade you receive in this course will be determined from exams, quizzes and/or projects during the semester and a final exam. You will also be responsible for any quizzes given over notes and readings through out the semester. The final exam will not be cumulative. There is no curve for this course or for any assignment. There is no extra credit for this class. 3 exams 100pts. each=300 10 quizzes/short projects 10 pts. each=100 Final Exam 100pts.=100 Total 500 points Break down of grade: 451-500=A 401-450=B 351-400=C 301-350=D Below 300=F Cheating: Plagiarism is a serious offense not taken lightly in this course. Cheating of any kind, whether plagiarism or copying another’s work will result in dismissal from this class. There will be NO exceptions.
