English 1301-1302: Composition I and II Policy Statement Instructor: Stacey Conley Term: Fall 2011 School phone: 806-766-0600 Email address: [email protected] or [email protected] Tutorial times: I am available during 4th and 7th period, before school, during lunch, or by appointment Scope/Purpose English 1301 offers seniors opportunity to study the various modes of writing traditional in any college freshman course, thereby sharpening the ability to think carefully and then express themselves carefully. English 1302 offers seniors experience and practice in critical writing, including research and writing from sources. In addition, the focus will alter to include all kinds of imaginative literature and the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. Required Texts Roberts and Jacobs. Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing. 7th ed. Perrine, Laurence. Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense. 10th ed. DiYanni, Robert. Literature: Reading Fiction, Poetry, Drama, and the Essay. 3rd ed. I will select from the following list: Beowulf Shakespeare: Hamlet Shakespeare: Richard III Mulisch: The Assault Conrad: Heart of Darkness Joyce: The Dubliners Hawthorne: The Scarlet Letter Brontë, E.: Wuthering Heights Masters: Spoon River Anthology McCarthy: The Road Milton: Paradise Lost Dante: The Inferno Shakespeare: Hamlet Stoppard: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead Plato: The Allegory of the Cave O’Brien: The Things They Carried Dystrovisty: Crime and PunishmentRequirements 1. Students will write a minimum of eight essays per semester, including the final examination; these will include the modes of narration, description, illustration, definition, cause and effect, comparison and contrast, classification and division, argumentation, and persuasion. 2. Students in the spring will compose one or more written assignments, requiring documentation and use of electronic sources. These assignments may be summary, explication or synthesis. 3. Students in the spring will read poems, dramas, short stories, and novels. Assessment will include essay exams, in-class essays, dialectical journals, and, where appropriate, out-of-class writing tasks. 4. Students will maintain the highest levels of personal syntax and diction in their own writings and rewritings. Methods of Evaluation Since student work is awarded a diploma by the Lubbock Board of Trustees and the Texas Education Agency, students’ work will be evaluated by a number grade, indicating superior or good or average or poor or unacceptable. All assignments must be submitted on time and in the proper format. That work must demonstrate the following characteristics: 1. Accuracy of content; 2. Use of the conventions of standard grammar; 3. Use of an appropriate method of development for an assignment; 4. Use of principles of unity and coherence; and 5. Use of logical, factual arguments to advance the thesis. Instructional Objectives By the end of 1301, students should have written a minimum of eight various modes of essay and refined skills of exposition and argumentation. By the end of 1302, students should have written a minimum of one multiple source essay and at least two analytical essays demonstrating documentation and use of electronic sources. Student should demonstrate knowledge of the major elements of literature, having applied critical thinking to the study of a wide variety of pieces and having written critical essays, including ones such as summary, paraphrase, explication, or synthesis. Grading Policy The Lubbock Board of Trustees requires a mixture of single and weighted grades, numbering at least one grade per week of the six weeks, daily grades equaling at least 50% of total grade and at least two different major grades making up the other 50%, with no single grade worth more than 25%. This policy seems to fit very well into the expectations of a South Plains courses. Absence Policy 1. Punctuality and class attendance are essential. 2. All make-up work will appear quickly, under the direction of the teacher, preferably on the next block day the student appears at school.3. More than five missed classes will require instructor to request drop for student. Students with Disabilities Students with disabilities, including but not limited to physical, psychiatric, or learning disabilities, who wish to request accommodation in this class should notify the teacher and the Special Education Coordinator at Coronado High School early in the semester so that appropriate arrangements may be made. The latter will follow the state education and federal legal guidelines for facilitating classroom participation and course credit. Plagiarism and Cheating “Complete honesty is required of the student in the presentation of any and all phases of course work. This applies to quizzes . . . as well as to final examinations, to daily reports and to term papers” (SPC General Catalogue). Failure to comply with this policy will result in a dual credit F for the assignment and can result in a dual credit F for the course if circumstances
