May include quizzes individual or group exercises. No “make-ups” if you are absent, arrive late, or leave early. Homework (80 pts) - assignments will involve sketching, problem solving and essay. Each assignment is worth 10 pts. and must be handed in on the due date. Late work receives 5 pt. deduction. Current Event Summaries (50 pts). 10 write-ups @ 5 pts each (½ page, double-spaced, typed) that summarize a geologically current event. See Course Calendar for due dates. See Current Event Summaries handout for detailed information. Late work will receive a 2.5 pt deduction. Research Paper (70 pts). Includes annotated bibliography (15 pts), research paper (40 pts), oral presentation (15 pts). See Course Calendar for specific dates. See Research Paper handout for detailed information. Late papers receive point deductions. Exams (475 pts). Three exams, worth 100 pts each and the final, worth 175 pts will be given throughout the term (see Course Calendar for specific dates).GENERAL CLASS POLICIES Attendance: Come to class. You will get a better grade. If you don’t come to class you might get dropped. Official Absences: Official excused absences are those which occur when students are involved in an official activity of the college, students are called for jury duty or subpoenas, or students who experience the death of an immediate family member. All of the above require prior notification of the instructor. Make-up work will be allowed for official absences. Other Absences: All other absences are considered unofficial. There will be no make-ups for unofficial absences. Tardiness: Don’t be late. In-class work missed because of tardiness cannot be made up. GCC General Catalog & Student Handbook: Familiarize yourself with this book and adhere to the policies outlined. Course Objectives After completing this course you should be able to:  Describe the scientific foundations of geology.  Describe the three-part classification of rock processes.  Explain the theory of plate tectonics.  Describe mineral resources including: non-fuel, fossil fuel, and nuclear power.  Describe alternative energy sources.  Explain the cause of earthquakes and volcanoes and their affect on humans.  Describe earth’s surface geologic hazards including: landslides, flooding, groundwater and shorelines.  Describe how water quality is affected by humans. Incomplete Grades (I) “I” is given only when a student who is otherwise doing acceptable work is unable to complete a course because of an illness or other situation beyond the student’s control. The student is required to arrange with me for the completion of the course requirements.First Assignment Log on to CANVAS at https://learn.maricopa.edu/login Use your MEID username and password. COURSE DESCRIPTION Acquaints students with the use and importance of geological studies as they apply to the interactions between people and the earth. Includes geological processes and hazards such as floods, volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides; use of fossil fuels; mining of raw materials. 3 credits/3 periods. When taken with GLG 111, transfers to ASU, UA and NAU and will count as liberal studies lab science credit. Satisfies Global Awareness Credit (G).
