ActivitiesCPS SCHOOL OF EDUCATION AND COUNSELING GRADUATE LEARNING MODULE 7.09 EDFD 630 THEORIES OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING Course Description: In this course, students will study the theories and principals of human development and learning, emphasizing applications in educational settings. The course considers normal development and its conditions as well as a systematic study of life span development. The course has an emphasis on student learning in the specific level of teaching. Course Prerequisites: No prerequisite courses are required prior to the taking of this course Learning Topics: Learning Topic #1: Overview of Human Development: Components, Theory, and Research Strategies Learning Topic #2: Biosocial, Cognitive, and Psychosocial Development: Prenatal Through Adolescence Learning Topic #3: Biosocial, Cognitive, and Psychosocial Development: Adolescence Through Early Adulthood Learning Topic #4: Research and Writing Learning Topic #5: Understanding Definitions and Perspectives of Learning and Learning Theory Learning Topic #6: Learning Theory: Behaviorists, Social Cognitive Theory, and Cognitive Views of Learning Learning Topic #7: Complex Learning and Cognition and Motivation Learning Topic #8: Final Project Field Experience: This course includes 15 field experience hours focusing on human growth and development and learning theory. In order to receive a final grade for the course, students must turn in field experience logs at the required time. Students must maintain a copy for their personal records and/or the portfolio. First Night Assignment (for classroom-based courses only) A connection has been firmly established by numerous studies that show a positive correlation between motivation and academic achievement (Wlodkowski, 1999). Abraham Maslow’s theory of motivation is summed up in his hierarchy of needs. Find and copy the Hierarchy of Needs. Write Maslow’s definition for each of the levels of need. Using any of the age levels that you desire (elementary, middle school, or EDFD 630 Module 1/17 7/2009EDFD 630 Module 2/17 7/2009 high school) provide one or more examples of common student needs that illustrate each level of the hierarchy. Evaluate the potential of each need to affect a child’s motivation to learn. Define your beliefs about the role educators should take in addressing each of the needs. Required Resources: Berger, K.S. You need to be creative in this writing. An introductory paragraph describing the setting of the debate will be necessary to set the scene. Indications that you have read the chapters, understand the key points of each theory and that those points are substantiated through research will be a major factor in the assessment process.EDFD 630 Module 3/17 7/2009 • Topic #2: 10 points This paper should be written as a reflection paper. It need not be written in APA style. Indications that you understand the concepts of development for pre-k students through adolescence, and the corresponding relationship regarding this development and best practices in teaching, will be a major factor in the assessment of your paper. • Topic #3: 15 points The critique of the two articles will be assessed upon the writer’s ability to analyze and synthesize concepts and information and according to APA formatting style standards for “critiques”. • Topic #4: 20 points Develop a research project that that focuses on a current topic in cognitive development and learning processes. The paper should exemplify a scholarly effort, should be rich in content, and convey the writer’s understanding of how the topic relates to the study of human development and learning. The paper is due in Week 8 and must be in formal APA style formatting. This means you will need to refer to the Guidelines for Academic Papers and Research Projects. Formal APA style papers require a cover sheet, bibliographical listings at the end of the document and carry within text citations. This paper should be modeled after the final research paper described in the “Guidelines…” in that it has an introduction to the topic being researched and shared, the body is divided into sections by points about the subject that are addressed within the document; and end with a conclusion that will summarize what has been stated within the document.
