Math 100 Beginning Algebra Syllabus Spring 2011 Mr. Pietromonaco Back to home page This syllabus along with grades and supplemental support material can be found at www.flc.losrios.edu/~pietrod Disclaimer: All information in the syllabus is subject to change if the instructor finds it necessary. Any changes will be announced during a class session. Absent students are still responsible for any announced changes. Instructor: Dean Pietromonaco, web page www.flc.losrios.edu/~pietrod, Phone & voice mail: 608- 6990, E-mail: [email protected] Text: Beginning Algebra, 7th Edition, by Tobey/Slater ISBN 0321573757 Handouts: There will be a substantial number of handouts. The hybrid math 20 will have additional online work. Attendance: As this is a beginning course, attendance is critical to your success, thus roll will be taken and you may be dropped from the course if you miss more than 3 class meetings. If you are late more than 10 minutes, or you miss any ten minute period of class it will be counted as an absence. If you miss more than 3 classes and it is after the drop deadline your grade will be recorded as an F. You are responsible for any work/worksheets that you miss, I do not hold onto worksheets, so if you miss a day make sure a class mate gets a worksheet for you. If you are absent when I hand a test back please request test after class or during my office hour Special Note: If your cell phone rings on two separate occasions then you lose your make up privileges. If you answer the phone or you are text messaging on your phone, your highest test during the semester will be recorded as a zero. If you leave the class to talk on your phone it will be counted as an absence and your highest test score will be recorded as a zero. Additionally all rules of the school both behaviorally and academically will be enforced. In attentiveness will be considered a disruption, if you are disrupting the learning environment you will be asked to leave the class for the day and will be marked absent. There will be a quiz almost every class session except on days a test is given. There will also on occasion be a quiz at the end of a class session. If you leave earlier or come late on a day a quiz is given your score will be recorded as a zero No exceptions. Your lowest 2 quiz scores will be dropped (With a maximum of 15% of quizzes dropped). I allow everyone to drop two quizzes, I do because I understand not everyone can make it to every class meeting, and I also know sometimes we just don’t score well on a quiz. You may not under any circumstances drop more than 2 quizzes. Homeworkwill typically be checked during the administration of each exam. At times progress in book will be randomly evaluated Late homework will be accepted only once and only if you were not in attendance for the exam. Worksheets not from book need to have your name, page number, assignment number, and class at the top right hand corner of the page. Quizzes need to have your name the date and class number on the upper right hand corner of paper. All assignments need to be placed in the order they were assigned. Your homework will be graded for completeness and correctness. One class session at the end of the course will be used for a make -up exam. One and only one test may be made up and only if you scored 70% or above on all other exams. If you score lower on the make up exam you will receive half of the lower score. There will be a syllabus quiz the first day of class. You may not obtain a higher percentage in the class than what you scored on the syllabus quiz. Prerequisites: None. Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 11:30-12:55 and 3:30-5:00 FLC1-room 133. Friday 12:45-2:00 Office hours: For full schedule go to www.flc.losrios.edu/~pietrod Tutorial Help: The hours and locations tutors are available are posted online, go to the FLC homepage and click on the Tutorial Services link for further information. The Course Math 100 is a beginning Algebra course and covers basic operations on Algebraic expressions and equations along with word problems. No calculators or tables are allowed. The ability to use diagrams to simplify and calculate fractional expressions is required. No credit will be given for correct answers when the directions to set up problem and or use a diagram are not followed. Many of you have learned how to use algorithms you do not understand to get correct answers, the understanding of the mathematics you learn will be critical to your success in math 120. A complete course description can be found in the FLC Mathematics and Statistics brochure or the College Handbook. It is highly recommended that you see a counselor as part of your college planning. All sections and problems from the book will be covered. Course Objectives: Acquire symbolic manipulation skills Grading: Letter grades will be calculated based on the percentage of the total points, below is an approximate list of the points available during the semester A: 90%-100% B: 80%-90% C: 70%-79% D: 60%-69% F: below 60%Class/Homework: Will be collected next class session or during test and point will vary from 5 -20 points Quizzes: 10 to 20 points, must attend entire class session for credit Tests: 60-100 points, final exam ...................................100-200 points Student Learning Outcomes Math 100 Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: evaluate and expand polynomial expressions (including expressions written in scientific notation). report solutions to polynomial operations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. record factors of polynomial expressions by removing common factors, factoring difference of square expressions, and factoring trinomial expressions including perfect square trinomials. apply rules of exponents (including negative exponents) in the simplification of algebraic expressions. solve linear equations, linear formulas (of more than one variable), linear inequalities, and 2x2 systems of linear equations. produce graphs of solution sets of linear equations and linear inequalities in two variables. evaluate and simplify radical expressions and solve equations involving these. solve application problems using algebraic expressions, algebraic equations, algebraic inequalities, and graphing techniques. solve quadratic equations by factoring and using the quadratic formula.
