Course Description: This course is a survey of the history of Texas from the time of its early inhabitants to the present. Primary emphasis is placed on ideas and social concepts that constitute the Texas heritage. Course Purpose: To acquaint students with the diversity of Texas history and to promote critical thinking in interrelating the past to the present. Fundamentally, the course promotes general understanding of a body of knowledge any literate person should possess about the history of his own country. Course Requirements: To maximize a student’s potential to complete this course, he/she should attend all class meetings, complete all homework assignments and examinations in a timely manner, and complete all other projects or papers as assigned in the instructor’s specific instructions. Course Evaluation: See the instructor's course information sheet for specific items used in evaluating student performance. Attendance Policy: Whenever absences become excessive and in the instructor's opinion, minimum course objectives cannot be met due to absences, the student will be withdrawn from the course. Each instructor will have additional information about attendance on his/her course information sheet.Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be familiar with the development of Texas and its role in the world from the time of its early inhabitants to the present and demonstrate an understanding of Texas political, social, and economic institutions and traditions that have been a part of the evolving history. Students will be expected to: * Locate and identify the characteristics of the major geographical regions and places of historical significance in Texas and identify the political, social, and economic dynamics that have influenced the changing geographical boundaries of Texas. * Analyze the impact of exploration, colonization, industrialization, and various wars on the political, economic, and social development of Texas. * Identify and sequence major events that have shaped the history of Texas. * Recognize the contributions of significant individuals and various ethnic and racial groups to the development and growth of Texas and its diverse culture. * Identify political, economic, and social issues and problems that have characterized each era in the history of Texas and how they were resolved. * Trace the origins and evolution of the Texas political system and define the structure and basic political elements of the state government.CLASS INFORMATION, REQUIREMENTS, & POLICIES HIST 2301 – Survey of Texas History Internet Course – Instructor Christy Dockrey -- Fall 2011 Print and read carefully the entire syllabus below. Course Description & Objectives: This course will survey the history of Texas from the time of its early inhabitants to the present. After completion of this course, the student will be able to: * Describe the elements and events that contributed to the settlement of Texas and the distribution of its population. * Identify personalities and ideas that have shaped Texas. * Discuss the evolution of the culture, economy, and government of Texas * Explain how the unique history of Texas fits into the larger pattern of the American experience.The course is divided into four units of study that include the following textbook chapters and topics: Unit I – Early Texas A.
