(3 Lab.) 1164: Lifetime Fitness & Wellness I (1) Prerequisite: Developmental Reading 0093 or English as a Second Language (ESOL) 0044 or have met the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standard in Reading. Students are introduced to wellness related concepts and activities for the purpose of gaining knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate personal fitness level and to develop a personal lifelong fitness program. Activities include, but are not limited to: aerobics, circuit training, muscular development, flexibility, agility exercises, weight training and body composition. (3 Lab.)1119: Beginning Weight Training Instruction in weight training and conditioning techniques are stressed. Emphasis is placed on muscular strength and endurance. (3 Lab.) 1141: Intermediate Weight Training Skills and instruction in weight training techniques are developed beyond the beginner level. (3 Lab.) Textbooks and Other Course Materials: No text required, but referenced. Athletic attire and towel are required. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: - 1119/1134 o Student demonstrates improvement in their fitness level as measured by their fitness scores. o Student designs an appropriate individual program of fitness for future fitness and wellness. - 1141/1164 o Student demonstrates improvement in their fitness level through a pre/post physical fitness assessment. o Student designs and implements a personal fitness program to improve fitness parameters. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS: Lecture and Laboratory Course Materials: - Class/Laboratory Handouts - Attire: Appropriate workout clothing including shorts, shirt and athletic shoes MUST be worn during class time. A towel WILL need to be brought to each workout session to place on the benches/equipment during workouts. GENERAL COURSE OUTLINE: Throughout the semester students will be actively involved as follows: - attend the course orientation - class/laboratory handouts - listen to lectures relating to the course objectives and to the topics found within the class/laboratory handouts - perform laboratory activities to assess health status, physical fitness, stress level, nutrition status, and weight - participate in pre/post physical assessments to determine cardio respiratory endurance, muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, and body composition - design and implement an exercise program to support personal fitness/wellness goals - maintain an exercise log to monitor frequency, intensity, and duration of a personal exercise program - participate in written/verbal examinations to test cognitive understanding of fitness/wellness concepts.GENERAL COURSE POLICIES/PROCEDURES: - Be on time. - Be dressed to workout; athletic workout-type clothes and sport-type running/walking, rubber sole shoes are required. - Bring towel to put on work out equipment as you workout. - Nothing to eat or drink will be allowed in the workout room except bottled water with a cap. - All personal belongings go in designated area during workout. No phones during workout. - Log in each workout on your workout log; keep good records of your progress. - Set realistic goals and work in progressive manner to achieve them. - Take stopwatch/pedometer to walk/run/jogging trail to record each effort. METHODS OF EVALUATION: 1. Fitness Assessments - To determine cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. 2. Written Exams - To assess cognitive understanding of fitness/wellness concepts 3. Attendance/Workout Charts or Exercise Journals - To record and monitor personal fitness program to improve fitness parameters 4. Laboratory Assignments 5. Health/Wellness Inventories - To evaluate personal habits - To determine impact on health/wellness FINAL GRADE: 1. Convenient access is available online at www.econnect.dcccd.edu. Use your identification number when you log onto eConnect, an online system developed by the DCCCD to provide you with timely information regarding your college record. Your grades will also be printed on your Student Advising Report, which is available in the Admissions Office. WITHDRAWAL POLICY: If you are unable to complete this course, it is your responsibility to withdraw formally. The withdrawal request must be received in the Registrar’s Office by the “DROP DATE” indicated on the syllabus. Failure to do so will result in your receiving a performance grade, usually an “F.” If you drop a class or withdraw from the college before the official drop/withdrawal deadline, you will receive a “W” (Withdraw) in each class dropped.
