David GustafsonInstructor: Tammy J. JohnsE-mail: [email protected]. Course DescriptionReview of arithmetic of positive and negative integers, fractions, decimals, percentages. Covers measurement and geometric calculations. Basic algebraic concepts include simplifying expressions and solving simple equations. Prerequisite: MTH 0952. Overview of Requirements for Successful Completion of MTH 110: Pre-AlgebraPart 1: There are three competency exams (integers, fractions, decimals). You may use no notes and no calculators on the competency exams. All students MUST pass all competency topics. Any student who does not pass all competency exams will receive a 0.0 for his/her course grade, regardless of grades received on other required work. For more information about the competency exams refer to the appropriate section of the syllabus.Part 2: Students must successfully complete required coursework in addition to the competency exams. Your grade will depend on your success on required coursework.3. Course OutcomesStudents will be able to:Do arithmetic of fractions.Do arithmetic of decimals.Do mathematics of ratio/proportion/percentage.Do mathematics of geometry/measurement.Do graphs/statistics/signed number arithmetic.Do algebraic operations/linear equations.Use appropriate technology as part of their completion of course objectives.4. Associate Degree OutcomesThe Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the college. The Associate DegreeOutcomes addressed in this class are:Computational skills and understanding appropriate to the program of study (ADO 3)Critical thinking and problem-solving (ADO 4)Note: This course does not meet the mathematics requirements for graduation from JCC.5. Course Requirements and Grading SystemRequirements Points Percent of GradeExams: Four exams at 150 points (15%)each. You may use a scientific calculator.600 60%Final Exam: You may use one side of a3” x 5” note card for notes and a scientific calculator.200 20%Homework, Attendance, and Participation200 20%TOTAL 1000 100%No extra credit is offered for this course. There are no make up exams. See Class Calendar for dates of exams and the primary focus of each one. Please note that revisions to the Class Calendar may be necessary because of unforeseen circumstances. Class attendance will assure that you are aware of these revisions.7. For every class that you miss 1% will be taken off your final grade.If you leave class early or arrive late it will be considered an absence.9. Late Work PolicyI do not accept any late work.Exams are to be taken during class on the day announced. Competency exams must be completed by the deadline on the calendar.10. Participation GradeTo comply with Federal Regulations, I am to grade you after two weeks (8/30), five weeks (9/19), and eight weeks (10/26) from the start of the course. These grades are letter grades that do not count toward your GPA.V-verifies that you are participatingH-means that you are participating, but your work is not acceptable and need help to be successfulQ-means that you have not participated and have really quitIf you receive a Q, you are withdrawn from the course.After midterm I can no longer drop you from the course. If you want to withdraw, you will need to do it yourself.11.
