ROLES AND RESPONSIBILIESTEAM ISSUESATTENDANCECM 4120CHEMICAL PLANT OPERATIONS LABSPRING 2004SYLLABUSOBJECTIVEThe objective of this class is to give you assignments related to “Chemical Plant Operations” that are typicalfor B.S. entry level Chemical Engineers. You have a choice of 3 different pieces of equipment: Bioreactor,PDMS, and Solvent Recovery Unit. You will choose two of these. Dr. King will try to give everyone theequipment that they select, but this is not guaranteed. You will be given projects to accomplish on thisequipment. There is a CM4120 web site located at the following address that is useful for this class:http://www.chem.mtu.edu/chem_eng/current/New%20Courses/CM4120/CM4120.htm. Dr. King and Carrie Majkrzak (GTA) will supervise theSolvent Recovery Unit. Dave Caspary and Austin Bryan (GTA) will supervise the PDMS Pilot Plant. DaveCaspary is also the Safety Advisor for the CM4120 Safety Coordinators. Dave Shonnard and Ya Wen (GTA)will supervise the Bioreactor Unit. Tim Gasperich is the Lab Supervisor. Jerry Norkol is the Lab Technician.TEAMS/INDIVIDUAL WORKThis class will involve individual and team grades. Homework 1 3.0%Quizzes 30.0%Project 1 33.5%Project 2 33.5% 100.0%There is one homework assignment and it is an individual grade. Quizzes (approximately 5; closed book, closed notes, open mind) are individual grades and will be typically given on Friday at the 9am-10amlecture. If you know you will miss a quiz then email Julie King immediately about when and why (plant trip,MTU sporting team event, etc.) and arrangements will be made. Each person will be the Safety Coordinator once during the semester. Project grades will include bothindividual and team grades. There will be a proposal and check in required as part of your project objectives. There will a final written report and an oral presentation required as well. Advice is available from eachinstructor until the day before each ‘assignment’ is due. A portfolio will be required for each project. For each project, the proposal, check-in, quizzes, progressreports, final report, and oral presentation will be different. Consult your advisor to find out what is required. This lab experience is intended to simulate real life. Each project is different and typically needs different1preparation and reporting. Although you may have one ‘administrative boss’ who evaluates yourperformance (do I still have a job, do I get a raise, do I get a new job function, etc) you will be working formany people (technicians who run the plant, the unit supervisor who is the boss of the technicians, other unitsupervisors if you have to cover for an engineer who is sick, on vacation, or temporarily reassigned). PROFESSIONAL BEHAVIORIn this class professional behavior is required of each student. You should treat this class as you would aprofessional job environment. If you have questions for the instructor you should set up a meeting with theinstructor (your boss). You should prepare for the meeting by knowing what you want to accomplish andconsolidating all your questions in a short time period. TEAM ISSUESSome of the grades are team based but Dr. King retains the right to adjust these grades based on informationin the peer evaluations, observations made by Dr. King, Dr. Shonnard, Dave Caspary, Tim Gasperich, theGTA’s, etc. All peer evaluations will be sealed and included in the final portfolio. Dr. King will hold theseteam evaluations in her files as confidential information. We want to encourage all team members to solvetheir problems internally (yourself). If a team problem is brought to Dr. King, Dave Caspary, or Dr.Shonnard’s attention, then Dr. King will investigate, impose a solution and adjust grades accordingly. Someteam members may like her solution and some may not. If a team brings an item to Dr. King’s attention, andDr. King investigates and decides that it was trivial and should have been worked out by the team, then allteam members’ grades could suffer (you are wasting your boss’s time and the company’s money). LATE WORK/REGRADESAll work is due on the day stated on that handout. All late work will receive a 0. If you believe your paperwas graded incorrectly, then you must make a request in writing to Dr. King within 1 week of the date thatthe paper was returned. If you are ill (don’t show up with 102oF fever, chills, etc.), then email Dr. King andyour team members so we know what is going on. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITYYou are responsible for reading material, homework, and lecture material. You can be tested on any of thesematerials. ATTENDANCEIt is required that each student be present for all class meetings, safety meetings, and any meeting with theGTA’s or instructor(s). Safety meetings are mandatory. If you have a plant trip, MTU athletic event, conference, etc. that conflicts with a safety meeting, you must send a memo to Dave Caspary before themeeting to request an excused absence. If you miss due to illness, see Dave Caspary as soon as you return toclass. If a student misses any class meeting or meeting with an instructor or GTA, then the student mustemail Dr. Julie King and the instructor or GTA involved explaining why the absence occurred. Appropriateaction will then be taken by Dr. Julie King. If you know you will miss a class, email Dr. King and theinstructor(s)/GTA involved before that class to determine what to do to make this up.LIBRARY RESERVE MATERIALSThere are several books (for example, Wankat’s book is useful for the Solvent Recovery Unit) useful forCM4120 on reserve at the MTU library. They can be checked out for 1 hour. Read and copy what you needfrom them (a few pages). CALCULATION PROCEDUREThe procedure used to solve a problem must be shown on all quizzes, projects/proposals, and homework. If only the answer is given, it will be marked as wrong. Answers
